Does satin or any other polished blade finish help with corrosion?

I was watching a video where a guy was talking about knives rusting and how to take care of your blades. One knife he showed had some rust but he had made the comment saying if it had a polished finish that it wouldnt have rusted nearly as quick. I was wondering if this is true? I was consdering on buying a busse combat battle mistress in in satin finish but was sure yet. If this is true about helping with corrosion then that may help my decision on a satin finish. Is this true?

In my experience, none of my satin finish INFI gets any oxidation unless left with salt water over an extended period of time and occasionally with foods like tomatoes. I can barely get it to take a patina. Anything that shows up on the blade has always buffed out easily.

What is true is that satin blades of any type are less porous than a blade that is not. Now with INFI it is not a stainless steel so in extremely humid climates or used around salt water a coated blade will likely be your best option if you are not custom to cleaning your blades after use, but that is no guarantee due to the carbon content.

Now it doesnt mean that a High carbon steel that is satin finished still wont rust cause it will. It just mean that regardless of steel you need to clean them after use and dry them off. Some even need to be oiled. I have a satin Nick that sits in my butcher block but it is washed and dryed after each use. Its been there for few years and has no rust and its never oiled.

I have even seen coated INFI that was not cared for get a tiny bit of oxidation and bubble the coating. Only once but I have seen it.

In non coated INFI blades satin will be more corrosion resistant than a BBDC or Comp finish due to the fact that they are more porous. Satin blades have a tighter grain structure.

Hope that helps:)

Thanks guys for the quick feedback. Im newer to blades and am still trying to figure out all this knife information and knife care.

Marine Tuf Cloth is a great solution to keep your knives rust free. I wipe down all of my knives with Marine Tuf Cloth once a year, and again after heavy use, and have never had a problem with rust. They are non-toxic but not rated as food safe so I'll scrub my knife clean prior to using it for food. Note sure if that is necessary but I figure it is best to be safe. Get the cloth in the jar and it won't dry out. Keep the Tuf Cloth off of your micarta handles since the lubricant can sink into the fibers and then you have to deep clean to remove.

Double cut will attract more moisture than satin so you have to be nicer to your DC knives when it comes to wet conditions.

I have a competition Hell Razor that was developing quite a bit of rust over most of the blade. I used some steel wool to clean up the rust, and wiped it down with a Tuff cloth with CLP. That was over 2 years ago and it hasn't developed any more rust. I love that stuff.

Thanks for the tips fellas. Im definitely gonna buy on of those tuff cloths if i can locate one.

It's not that steel is porous, it's that a polished surface is smoother than a non-polished surface. It has less surface area for moisture to adhere to, so it won't oxidize nearly as quickly as a surface that isn't highly polished. Bead blasted blades will rust much quicker than satin finished because they have more surface area for moisture to adhere to. This applies to all steels. Plain 1095 with a high polish will rust far slower than if it had a bead blast finish, etc.

Food safe, prevents rust, very cheap! 5 bucks for 30 wipes, each one can be used on a few blades

And Eezox... this is NOT food safe, but cleans and protects excellently!! I have and use Eezox premium knife care oiler and spray on knives I wont use for food prep.

I like satin because even if it does get any rust rust spots, which is very rare, it's so easy to clean right off. Either toothpaste or mothers mag and it's good as new!

The EEZOX will keep your satin blades completely rust/corrosion free. Incredible stuff.
