Does sharpening a Sebenza decrease value?

I just got a lg 21 today. Its used, and decently sharp, just not hair popping. I like it a lot but might want to trade it for a small 21 with micarta down the road, maybe sooner then later. If I sharpen this myself would this lose trade value or sale value in the forum? I want to get it scary sharp but its not worth it if I want to trade it in a bit and have it lose value. What do you guys think???

Edit: stropped it on a belt a couple of passes and now it shaves hair. Good enough for now.

If a knife is new in the box. It is worth more than one that has been used, and that includes sharpening. The exception would be a new knife custom ground by a maker such as Tom Krein. I once had a Strider AR that was reground by Tom and I sold it later on for more than I paid for it. If you bought it used, I wouldn't worry about.

Like mentioned above, the fact that it's been sharpened means you can't classify it as NIB, which decreases the value compared to a brand new one. The fact that yours was already used means you likely paid less than a new one, so your loss should be minimal... provided the sharpening job is a pristine one.

I think you should get the knife you want and set it up to your taste.

Since it's already used, you can't sell/trade it as NIB, so I see no harm to its value to touch up the edge.

Now if someone's sharpening skills were very sloppy, and he tended to scratch the hell out of blades when he sharpened, then it would be another story.

I think that if you don't attend to use the knife, its like a gun without ammo it becomes useless.

Send it back to CRK to get it touched up, should not matter if they perform the service.

Thanks guys, I figured it wouldnt be a big deal but just wanted to see what the forum thought. I am no master but I can put a nice edge on something without messing up the blade finish. I ask because I have every intention of using my large 21 to see if I like this size or would prefer a small.

Dont worry Cofade2black, I will be carrying it today.

Antony, I would and may still send it back, I would rather just get use out of it first and figure out which one I want then send that one back if when I need to.

The moment you bought that knife the value was decreased. Why would anyone pay full price for your knife or any other Sebenza, even if it's NIB, when they can get a brand new one from CRK for the same cost?

I bought it used, maybe you missed that part. My question was more directed to make sure the trade value wouldnt go down in most people's view since I may want to trade this for a small micarta.

As it turns out I just did a couple passes on a leather belt and it shaves hair again. Problem solved, that was wonderfully simple.

I would guess everyone expects a user to have been sharpened
periodically so not sure what the point of this thread is..

I get the feeling that not everyone has noticed that the knife is already used.

Sharpen away.
