Does size matter

Those are all great looking knives.

To me, size matters. Though there are a few smaller designs I really like (chute knive for instance), most of my favorites are big knives. I am just putting together an order for a knife ith a 15 inch blade, getting close to short sword.

I like the top one. Gert sure knows how to make a knife.
Size sure matters. Anything over 20" is getting on the big side ;)
I like 10"-12" for choppers, so 9" is definitely reasonable enough IMHO

My ex-wife said size matters and left me......I assumed she was talking about knives. LOL

Size matters, or I wouldn't be so popular.

Just kidding.

Böker's Grabendolch was designed for the trench battles of WWI, for man to man fight in a narrow trench, where a bajonett is not a good choice. It was a dagger to kill enemy (French) soldiers, and it probably doesn't take more than 6" to kill a frenchman. I read a study somewhere saying that everything over 4" is deadly for humans if used properly.

When hunting boar with dogs I occasionally got in a position where I couldn't safely fire a shot on a wounded boar because of the dogs. In this case a longer blade between 7"-9" comes in handy. I don't care for huge choppers either but I always carry at leastt a 7"-8" fixedblade when hunting.

It also depends quite a bit on a the guy. I am 6'1" at 187 lbs. A battle mistress looks kind of funny on me. My neighbor is a 6' guy at 290 lbs. with hands like toilet seats. A monster chopper looks OK in his hands.

Nice knives, I like the subhilt best. As far as length goes for an everyday general utility knife I think that about 4"-6" is plenty. Anything longer will probably be cumbersome to carry around all day for most people. For chopping and heavy chores though something in the 8"-10" range is my preference. It may not look proportional but holding a nice 12"+ custom sure feels nice...

Would like some particulars....Sheath, guard materials?

Best Regards,

A lot of the big custom knives are made for show but can "go" if called upon. However, I think that Bill Bagwell makes some very valid points about big knives. Reach out and touch someone..........with great force while they are still too far away to touch you. Now most of us will never have to worry about such things, but a feral hog's tusks and fighting plates can be a nuisance too.

I love big knives, large bowies/fighters and hunters make up the bulk of my collection. I do use many of them. Most are in the 9-11 inch range and I find them comfortable. I am 6'4-5 and I dont think I look bad holding a large knife like Walt pointed out. Is 6" enough? For some but I carry around a 9 at all times:D
