Does stripping void warranty?

Hi guys,
I was just wondering about this since I plan on stripping my mint BK2 & wouldn't want this to affect warranty down the track. Not that I doubt the ability of the 2 just peace of mind having a warranty I guess. Heck it's one of the reasons I bought the blade.
Thanks guys!

wishy washy answer: might depends on how you do it? with a bench grinder? probably ;)

with chemicals? well, up to KaBar, but possibly not.

they have warrantied some knives in the past, that would on first thought be modified and even abused, but that's because they are awesome.

as long as you don't affect the heat treat, or radically change it and then destroy it later, calling it a "failure"... you're probably good to ask, but it's their call still.

Just my 2 cents on this... But use the knife a little bit first. Make sure there are no factory defects in it, make sure it's all up to par. They are mass produced and anything that is CAN have faults in it. It prolly won't, but might. Anyway. After that, if it doesn't fail. It's not likely you'll need the warranty anyway. Strip away, make it yours, and it'll last a lifetime.

Just don't abuse it, don't baton through knots, don't cut through a lawn mower and cinder block (though the 2 can do it. Pics around here somewhere)

In reality, Kabar warranties against manufacturer defects. Stuff like that.

Like Bladite said, how you go about it makes all the difference.

Paint or not, I know Kabar will warranty against manufacturer defects.

ESEE Down Under,

Well that depends.... If you strip off the powder coat and then complain about the finish, rusting, surface pits, rough laser pulse markes on the edge, crooked cantles, crooked grinds, etc...We tend to get cranky. That should be done before one mars up a knife. That is pure common sense and etiquette.
If you strip the knife coating and the blade breaks under normal usage, we will happily replace under warranty. You can probably even push the term "abuse" and we will smile and replace.
We try to be very accomodating, but as everyone has seen in the recent past, there are those that will abuse the warranty and our good will.

Point number two: Being polite really helps. Admitting you screwed up helps. Being a jerk does not help. Lying about what happened does not help. We've seen and heard every excuse, seen just about every type of abuse that can take place on a knife. Just be straight with us and that will take you a long way, both with knife warranties and in life.
Hope this helps.

+1000000000000000!

I see it everyday at home and at work.

"I didn't do anything. It was like that when I got here".
"Not me".
"It was someone else".

Especially at work (I.T.) If I know what was done, I can fix it faster. I don't have to figure out what you did to it. Honesty goes a long way no matter who you are.

Now back to our scheduled program.

I was wondering about this myself, so thanks for this thread.

I work Tech Support for Apple. I can't tell you how many times I could have fixed something in half the time had I known about the cat piss, jelly-beans or third party mods up front.

Thanks for the input guys, especially Tooj.
I have no doubts about the quality of the blades, after all the blade coating isn't a 'cover up' of what's underneath, in fact it's to protect what's underneath. I guess you could also argue that by using the blade you are in fact stripping it, bit by bit.

Glad I got clarification on this!
Thanks again!

I got a BK2 stuck in my butt crack once and it caused the coating to peel off, can I get a new one?

;)

Who has ever heard of a mint Becker? My BK2 cut itself out of the box and yelled at me for not having a tree in my living room to chop the moment she arrived. Thorn is a silly girl.
