Does the AR make a good Urbanite EDC?

Hello Strider fans! First of all, everyone have a safe and happy New Year's Eve/Day!

That said, here's my story. If all goes well, in approximately 18 months I'll be graduating with a Masters in Philosophy! Yehaw! I'd liek to get myself a great graduation present (read: a new knife.) I've been thinking about the AR a lot lately. Currently I carry a benchmade AFCK, which has served me well. But a story from Brian Jones got me thinking a while bakc. He ised his TOPS CQT folder in a couple of survival situations. Once was to pry a door open to free a gal trapped inside a room, and the other time was when he came upon a womah who hut a deer with her vehicle. The knife was pounded through the deer's spinal column at the base of the head to put it down without pain, and then his knife was pounded throught the plastic bumper which had bent and was impacting the wheel. This allowed the lady to drive her vehicle.

So, I'm thinking a larger folder and an SAK on my keychain will do way more for me than my current setup. But, as admitted above, I am an urbanite, low speed high drag type of individual. Most of the time I cut cord, string, envelopes, things in the kitchen, cardboard, and sometimes wood. I also wouldn't hesitate to pull out my knife if warranted in a self-defense situation. Does the AR work well as an EDC knife? How well does it carry in one's jean pockets?

Whatever knife I get, it will be a once in a looooooong time purchase. In fact, if I start saving now I'll probably only be ready to order when I graduate. I'll have to wait for my present for a while! So, I want to get somethign I'll really use. Striders are great, but I don't want to get one if it will just collect dust, you know?

By the way, DON'T click on the "What's New" tab on TAD's site. You should see the Snody folders there! And the cool Striders! You'd be doing your pocket books a favor if you stay away from that link. :)

Thanks for the input.

For EDC you might want to look at the Buck Mini-strider spearpoint. It also could have dispatched the deer in the same manner. The bumper probably could have been fixed with the tire iron in the trunk of the car.The AR is a magnificent knife I agree but is big and heavy and I think you're right about it collecting dust once the newness fades, thats why I don't have one.On the bright side think of all the other knives you'll be able to afford.Just my opinion.

I think the AR is an excellent EDC. When mine ever gets back to me from the shop, I will carry it everyday. It is a big knife but that's what I like about it. The finger choil allows you to choak up and makes the blade seem smaller.

Granted, I always carry more than one blade, the AR is for the tougher tasks. It's everything I want in a folder. Big, beefey and strong. It fits easily into my jeans pocket, no problem. If there was only one folder I could carry, make mine an AR.

You said that you will carry a SAK with it. I think that you'll have an excellent EDC combination.

Good luck with your studies,

S.

imho it would be an excellent EDC - i carry my buck/strider full size tanto daily, and plan to get a AR/GB soon - if ya are into heavy duty knives (before this i carried a SIFU and a Crawford Ti Kasper) ya wont mind the weight/ bulk - though believe me a lot bigger than a AFCK - if ya are into a big bad a$$ knife and dont mind a little weight /bulk, you'll do fine w/it, if not, maybe not.........but it works for me

My AR is with me everyday as my EDC. Once you get used to carrying it, it doesn't seem heavy at all and once you get used to using it then you are spoiled completely.

I carry my AR everyday also. If your going into a situation where you cannot carry a fixed blade, then the AR is essentially a fixed blade it just folds! The AR is the way you want to go when looking into a heavy duty EDC folder. It is has been great for me I carry it daily either in my coat pocket, in my pants front pocket or on the kydex rig.

I had pervious to getting my AR the Buck/Strider Spearpoint folder. I thought that was a heavy duty knife until the AR came along.

I usually carry a fixed blade because I am lucky and can do it, but every day I have my AR on me and a smaller general use blade like my Emerson CQC-7 or my SOCFK Emerson.

I like the mini buck/Striders but they are very small, tough though.

If a fixed blade is out of the question then Overall ideal EDC would be AR Strider, backed by a smaller use knife.

I carry my AR everywhere. It's big but you get used to it real fast. It might be uncomfortable for two or three days but after that it melts right in. And once you get used to it you can take pride that you're carrying the badest folder on the planet right now. They will do any cutting job you need. Them things is pointy.

I'm using the SLCC more now.
Just for fun.
I carried my AR or GB every day for at least 2 years. (With kydex clip)
The things are great.

We have some auto-opening kydex clips on the way from Skunk as well.

Talk to you soon

Mick

Thanks everyone for the information. I'd prefer it if the folks around here would be fine with me carrying a WB all day long! Unfortunately, that isn't the case.

Mick, it is nice to see you posting a bit more too. I noticed you disappeared for a while. I guess the shop can get REAL busy sometimes eh.

Happy New Year everyone. Oh, and good luck nyeti! I still read your article on Strider Knives in the tactical edition of Handgunner? magazine. The pics are awesome too!

I have AR 011 and it has been my daily carry after receiving it. I like the kydex sheath but prefer to carry it clipped in my right front pocket. Yes, it is the heaviest duty folder made. yes, it is thick and heavy. Yes, it does tend to make my pants slip down as a result of the weight. But, it is absolutely the sharpest folder I have. It has done everything from carving a roast to opening mail. You will not be disappointed. I can't think of any other folder that I'd like to own and use at the moment, except fro maybe a GB!

For my everyday urban carry stuff I really like my Talonite SLCC. I carry the big folders on my duty belts at work, but I prefer the lighter stuff for on-body carry off-duty. I always keep an MT-L in my backpack, and I have an AD attached to the seatbelt of my vehicle, and a BG in the door panel, so its not like I am lacking a big Strider somewhere. By the way, the AD Tek-loc'd to the seatbelt is really a cool set-up. I have instant access to the little wicked fella.
