Does the blade profile on this BK14 look right?

Looks slightly weird up near the tip to me. It's been used but I might buy it just because of the leather sheath and scales being included.

It is a touch off of the"standard" grind. But remember, these are ground by hand, so you will get some variance, though that is an extreme example.

This type of question had been posted before and the general consensus was that if you are OK with it, then it is fine. If you can't stand it, send it in and see what they say.

Take the cost of new and tack on $20 to make up for the sheath, shape, and use, if it is under that then I personally wood consider it about right.

No. It looks off to me. Did you get it new or used?

Haven't bought it yet, I was just considering it. It's been used as a woods knife for a few months. I'll just go ahead and buy new with a set of scales, or from the exchange if I see one. Thanks.

This one has been sharpened several times so its not the factory grind.

That does not look right to me. I had a bk16 that had that same shape and I was able to get it exchanged at the store I bought it at. I may be in the minority here, but that variation in shape really bothered me even though the blade is a tool that will get used.

All of the edge is reduced - especially the last inch running to the point.

I have a BK11 and BK24 - the blade shapes are identical. This was modified to make it pointier.

I don't care for the sheath, either.

Yeah, it looks as though it's been modified a bit.

It does look modified, but if the price were right, I'd buy it anyway. It's still sharp.

What would you consider a right price to be on it? According to the current owner "it's been used a lot in the past few months and sharpened as needed" Which makes me think he may have either taken a small chip out of the edge and had to reprofile it, or is just a really bad sharpener.

I think that would be up to the "beholder" (you) and what you see when you're looking. What I see is a perfectly serviceable knife that comes with some extras....I wouldn't factor the sheath into the equation myself, but then again I dabble in Kydex (starting to do leather as well). I kinda like the pointier shape, although I'd consider it an opportunity to reprofile it even more. It kinda all depends what your approach is. IMO all the Beckers are great blades outta the box....for the people that buy them. Since I've been bitten by the mod bug, IMO they are all great platforms as well to tweak (*even really hugely tweak) and make better....or at least different and user purposed. One example: my 11 I bought stock, and used, stripped the blade, and used some more. Finally got to thinking what I'd change, did some drawing, sat on the idea a bit....then just went for it. Honestly, Ethan designs truly great stuff....but I like my version way more:

Like I said, it all depends on your mindset....

I'm not really wanting to mod anything because I'm not really comfortable trying anything other than stripping the coating and that's already been done. I would want to buy handles along with the knife if I bought new, and the sheath is definitely a factor (ones like it are around 42 dollars), but at the same time I would like it if I could neck carry if I wanted to, and it doesn't come with the original sheath.

How do you even go about reprofiling a blade?

Nice mods on the Necker.

I don't know most of the important facts on the back story of this particular blade, but I'd easily believe that the knife came from the factory with that blade shape. I've seen many pictures of 11's and 16's with a similar variation on the original shape.

Like others have wisely stated, if you are ok with this variation in the original shape, then go for it!

I'd be fine with it if I knew the seller hadn't whacked up the blade by doing something stupid with it. Time to send more questions to him. :D

Simple....grind away the bits you don't want ;).
Nice mods on the Necker.
Thanks. I carry and use it a LOT more than my stock one. I'd carry it everyday but for people's misperceptions about intended use. Since I left the bottle opener intact, when asked, I usually reply with "oh, it's just a fancy bottle opener.....with a sharp thingy at the other end.....you, know, for cutting limes and sausages...."

Update: The guy says he hasn't had any other BK14's to compare the shape to, and that it's been lightly sharpened on a Spyderco Sharpmaker, so not enough to take any edge off. It's looking pretty good to me now. I'll put a nice vinegar and mustard patina on that baby and it'll be better than a new one. :D That is if I get it.

If you check www.kabar.com you'll see all the Becker blades and they all have the same beautiful, smoothly curved end of the blade leading up to the point. The one you're looking at has a flat line of edge leading to the point.

In an attempt to be helpful I'm just pointing out the difference, not saying if it is right or wrong or good or bad for you.

Yeah, my dad has a BK24 that I was comparing it to and it's a definite difference, but I don't think it would matter too much to me. When I do get an Eskabar (this one or not) it's going to be my tool for everything my BK9 is too big to do very comfortably.

Does anyone think the flat line would negatively effect it in any way as a small bushcraft knife?

One reason I'm really drawn to it is just because of that sheath. It looks awesome.

I'm kind of a freak and if it is off aesthetically it would bother me. I really can't imagine it making a difference in actual use, though!
