Does the Case Russlock actually lock?

Case's website isn't very descriptive and I've never owned a Russlock before. So does the blade actually lock open? Also, for those of you that own one do you like it? It looks like a pretty cool knife, I just don't know if that piece off the back of the blade would get in the way once it's closed.

One more question for those that own a swingguard. How do you like it? I'm also looking at getting one of those.

Up until now, by Case ownership has been limited to Canoes, Whittlers, and Trappers.

Thanks,
Anthony

Thanks Miro.

Cool concept, it just looks kind of clumsy in the hand.

yep they lock{liner lock} and the example i had locked well. the only way i could find to easily open with the tail was to use my thumb. works pretty well although not nearly as easy as a spyderco.

That's because it's supposed to open with the thumb. Lockup can be questionable- I've seen some that lock tight as a drum, and some that can close a few degrees, almost like the old Schrade linerlocks, before stopping positively.

They're good knives, but like the old Schrades, the lock is there as a secondary device to keep it open. Primary is still the backspring.

Yes, it is a liner lock, and yes ir is a little (or maybe alot) clumsy in the hand. I bought one for EDC, but it's not really a very good choice IMO. It is a very interesting knife though, and it's okay to carry if you are dressed up or something. It's pretty hard to open with only a thumb though.

I tend yo open mine one handed by levering the tang (?) against my leg them flicking it with a snap of my wrist the rest of the way open. Second nature now.

I know a lot of old-timers used to open them on the heel of their boots! It's a nifty piece, and really not that clumsy at all, just....different. :D

It's a liner lock. The lock in the Russlock is meant to be a secondary safety to the backspring- which is the only blate retainer on most other traditional knives (something that tactical liner locks lack).

It's still a cool looking design, maybe I'll pick one up cheap or in a trade some time down the road.

Thanks for the feedback everyone!
