Will a BM Griptilian Flip out easily (with Axis lock) if you pull down on the Axis lock knob, or does the short blade length make it difficult?

Not a bad choice at all..... But I personally don't recommend using a knife for self defense unless you've had years of training and practice....... last ditch effort though I think it'd work fine... just like any other knife.

Yeah, but not too many options in the great limiting North. That said, I've used an AFCK in self-defense before without any training.

when you're in a situation it's not a speed drawing contest. i can open and close my grippy quick, but i can also do it with a kershaw, or my CRKT m16 or a ton of others. its all in practice. Seconds don't really matter as long as you get it out. a buck 110 wouldn't be a "quick" knife but it will do the job just as well. Also, she should be trained... unless youre just looking for a threatening device, then you should get something bigger.

Hmm, the one time I needed my knife, that it was an AXIS came in handy

I dunno, i have no problem with opening other knives. I do love the axis lock don't get me wrong, but there are more out there besides the axis that are quick. If i need speed yes i'll go with an axis, but by the time you get the knife out and infront of your body, if youre really in a situation, it should be open already. and i can do that with all of the above said. it just takes practice and adjusting your knife if it's too tight. I got my girl a buck lite folder and a vic classic alox. Maybe get her a gun or pepper spray?

Not my girl, so let's nix the "get her" talk before it starts lol. Can't have a gun where she is.

Haha my bad. Do you wish she was :-). I figured you were buying her the knife lol. I'd recommend to her pepper spray then. Recommend a SAK to her for purse carry but have her buy pepper spray.

Naw, she saw I was getting a couple of Benchmades and I heard "Oooo I want that one"

I'll echo the sentiment about using pepper spray for self defense rather than a knife. But if she does want a knife in her purse for utility purposes, then, yes, the BM Grip flips open very fast, and the blade is more than hefty enough to flip open and closed when you're holding the Axis lock. And if she wants one, then you already know she'll be happy with it!

I am a security officer and would highy recommend OC (pepper spray). I would also recommend she gets trained on it first. The rule is 2 1 second sprays. The first should hit the eyes the next right below the nose. You will never understand how it works if your not sprayed yourself. Yes I have had the training. Also OC sometimes will NOT stop someone. Some people it doesn't effect at all. If that fails get a Pink Mini Grip. :D

What do you think of the Defense Technologies X2? One thing I can't figure out is why they make a non-360 version.

You have to be careful carrying a knife up here for self defense. The way the laws are written up here it is an offense to carry anything as a weapon, but you can carry anything as a tool:rolleyes: The only things in the way of knives that you can't carry or posses are Bali-songs and autos. Just remember that any time you are asked about your knife in Canada, it is a tool for cutting not a weapon. Our prohibited weapons laws have so many shades of gray that its scary. The only good thing is that there are no blade length limits, I have walked down the streets here in Winnipeg with a 13" Khukuri strapped to my back pack and was only asked where I was going with the knife. Told the cops I was going to do some trail work and they were fine with it.
