Does the guy with the most motors, win?

I was looking for some space, to put a new machine, in my smithy and found, to my dismay, that there was none. Isn't it amazing how quick the space, disappears.
As I looked about, I started counting the number of motors that it takes to run my shop.
I am not speaking of hand tools. I am talking about standing machinery where you can get your hands around the motor. Buffer, drill press, grinders and the like. I have 13 motors  in a 20x16 foot shop. I know this is not excessive by knife makers standards. So tell us; how many motors do you have running your shop?
I have heard it said; "The guy that ends up with the most toys, wins" I have never bought into that, but the guy with the most motors means the guy with the most machines. Now that might make sense to me.:D

Happy holidays, Fred

Hmm lets see.
1)Wilton variable speed 2X72
2)1Hp Buffer
3) Delta Drill press
4) Metal cutting bandsaw
5) 4 inch belt/disc sander

5 machines for workin
I don't know if the dust collection machine or the paragon HT oven count so I leave them separate.
Shop size 8 X 10

Never thought of it. let see KMG 3hp, drill press 1hp, buffer 1hp, metal band saw? , wood band saw? press, and a 3hp mill. Guess I cant count the 4 spares they just eat up space
in my 12x16 shop. Dang I don't win

Dang, never thought about it that way, Fred.

I count 17 motors on stationary tools. Plus two Foredoms, so 19 altogether.

And, of course, there's another grinder I would just REALLY like to have next year, if I can find space. LOL

Edited to add: add 4 for the MIG, chopsaw, compressor for the sandblaster and grinder out in the garage.
I sure hope my wife doesn't see this thread.

It is both awe inspiring and a little scary when you finish counting.:D
I had the same thought about my wife.

Fred

I keep remembering more, too! The blower on the forge, the Darex drill sharpener, the small buffer on the engraving bench, the scroll saw....

It's sort of humbling when you stop to think about some of the art that comes out of third world countries where a craftsman sits on the dirt floor and turns out these works of beauty with absolutely ZERO power, using his bare feet for a vise.

No truer words were ever spoken.:o Fred

Watch out ! When all your motors are running -if your wife turns on the Christmas lights - POP goes the breaker !

Hmmmmmmmm.....
  1. Drill press
  2. Table saw
  3. Compound mitre saw
  4. Abrasive cutoff saw
  5. Wood cutting bandsaw
  6. Metal cutting band saw
  7. KMG
  8. Air compressor
  9. 2x42 belt sander
  10. 1/30 belt sander
  11. 6" stone wheel grinder/buffer
  12. Shop Vac/Dust collector system
  13. Router table (probably doesn't count, since the router can be taken off and used as a hand tool)

and I'm looking at getting the 'Chevrolet Smoker' that is pictured in the attachments. If I get this, I'll win hands down! The guy that designed and built this thing had to be a knifemaker!!

Stacy,

WoW! Did you get a special, thank you card, from your local utility company? :D
The funny thing is, you can always justify, one more, if you give it some thought. I know I can!
Have a nice holiday, Fred

Not much for motors really, but quite a bit compared to when I first started gathering tools and equipment. About all I had for tools in 2000 was a tape measure and a cordless screwdriver!
Another amazing thing to think about is how much money you have tied up in your shop/garage/household tools and equipment! It sure would cost a bunch to replace it all! -Matt-

Dang, reading Stacy's well-considered list, it's surprising how many items like the fans, powered respirator, shop-refrigerator compressor, etc, can go overlooked in a casual inventory. We take the powered appliances so for granted that they go unnoticed. Even this computer has three electric motors what with a fan, disc drive and hard drive, as does my toothbrush.....

What a remarkably wired world! Just the resistance in the wires must be contributing somehow to global warming! :)

Anybody remember the Will Ferrell SNL skit about the TV announcer going feral when the power went out?

Better include a good set of Nicholsons in our bug-out bags. :D

If I turned them all at one time, I would be in deep kim-chee. I was intrigued by this post, and was somewhat surprised (OK, not really) by the amount of redundancy in my shops. As Fred said, you always seem to be able to justify one more or one bigger. I have pretty much reached the max needed in my setup........... But when I move to my retirement shop and go full time.... Oh Boy!!! I may well have 440 three phase pulled in.
Or I may order some uranium and build my own reactor.
