Like the SOG bowie? I mean a special symbol not a company symbol

Hi Jesse,

Thanks for the question. Nope. No 5th Special Forces logo is on the blade like the SOG Bowie.

Here's a picture of the Recon Bowie. One very beautiful knife!

I too am a fan of these replicas of the SOG knives used in Vietnam. I have a question about the Recon bowie. I see that the very tip has a small "clip" at the tip. Is it sharpened at all? Thanks!!

Oh, by the way Ron, I was at my nearest Mountain Equipment Co-Op (MEC) yesterday and overheard a guy asking the sales dude what the difference was between the SOG and Victorinox multi-tools. The customer seemed to me to be leaning towards the Victorinox model but the sales dude said he liked the SOG one because the tools fold from the outside of the handles and most of all becuase it is a very solid piece. The customer walked away with a ner SOG multi-tool!!! If my Gerber ever dies, I'll have to look closer at the SOG multi-tool.

Hi Cayola,

Thank you for the compliments and the questions. You are referring to the facetted tip that the SOG Bowie and the Trident has. It is a 1/4" long "false edge" portion on the top portion of the blade which has been sharpened. No, the Recon Bowie does not have this.

That's good I would not buy a knife that had a special groups insignia on it unless I was a member or collected things from that era. Thanks.

Ron, I think the Recon Bowie blade grind has a slight resemblence to the Randall #3. I had heard earlier that the original Vietnam era SOG bowies and recon bowies may have been patterned after Randall knives (probably #1's for the bowie and #3's for the recon bowie). Any truth to this from your perspective? I don't think this deminishes these great knives in any way, if true, but gives them a colorful history, again if true.

Thanks

Hi,

The special forces insignia was not a SOG Specialty Knives addition but rather was part of the original knives manufactured for SOG in Vietnam. The knife designer and man who contracted to have the knives made was Ben Baker (who was assigned as a Deputy Chief to CISO). Mr. Baker was quoted from an article in Fighting Knives magazine in Fall 1991 saying, "In 1967, the 5th SF requested CISO to assist their Mess Accociation in the purchase of 1,700 presentation knives etched on the reverse side with the SF crest and wording '5th SPECIAL FORCES GROUP (Adn)' with 'Vietnam' centered underneath. CISO agreed to assist, and deliveries were made by January of 1968, the knives paid for by the 5th's SFMA."

From the same article is quoted, "Baker scoffs at stories that attributes his SOG/SF knives as being Randall-inspired. 'The original knife was somewhat based upon my old 1916 Marbles [Gladstone Skinner], which was a fine knife.'"

There are three basic designs Mr. Baker created for the SOG group as outlined in this article he authored. The two replicas currently in SOG's line, and the third being a highly rare SCUBA/DEMO fixed blade and was delivered to the Naval Advisory Detachment (NAD) for missions against the North Vietnamese. Only thirty-nine were produced and only one is know to currently exist. It has a very similar handled to SOG's Recon Bowie, double edged, made of 1/4" stock, 7.25" long, and had spines and round sawteeth along the blade's back. They were made of stainless steel and were sterile.

This is a great article and if you can get your hands on it, it is a great read!

This is an era of history I personally know little about. Sorry I personlly won't be able to take it much further. I can answer more questions about SOG's knives or more about the article mention above.
