Does the spring in the Kershaw Leek easily and commonly break?

No, they tend to last really well. They are more prone to breaking than not having them. I've not heard of the torsion bar being more prone to breaking than omega springs in a benchmade, as another reference point. The springs in folding knives tend to last a long time, often longer than the owner. This is also dependant on how much you use one but they're designed to be used a lot and are not delicate.

I think more often the case is the torsion bar getting a little loose and it can make a little noise in the handle due to manufacturing tolerances. I find this to be more the case with the Chinese kershaws. But, this is more of a nuisance than a functional issue.

As a mildly similar design without the assist, maybe look at the civivi hadros if you're leary of the speed assist mech in the kershaw.

I suggest going to your local sporting goods store and buying one or two $10 knives. I've had knives that have lasted for years, worked great, and helped me out time and time again that only cost $9.99 before tax. Buy a couple of those in different styles; use them and abuse them. Then come back with what you liked and didn't like, get some suggestions, and make a quality purchase.

I’ve had some KAI springs that last forever and a couple that broke rather quickly and for no apparent reason. One of the two broken ones was a ZT. The springs didn’t snap in the middle, but they broke on the ends. KAI will fix them or send you a new part though. They are some of my favorite knives. I wouldn’t think twice about buying one.

Had many a Leek, never broke a spring. For that matter, I haven't had any of the springs break on any of the Kershaw models I've abused so far.

Even if I did, Kershaw has a fantastic warranty so I'd be set either way.

No and no. I’ve owned 5 leeks, never had an issue with the spring. Years of use, lots of fidgeting. I think you’re more likely to get bored with it and sell it than it is for you to experience any issues.

I used a Rainbow Leek (old AUS-6 model) nearly to death and the torsion bar never broke. I have 4 Leeks now, 2 of which have seen plenty of carry/use/fidgeting. Never broke a torsion bar. Given other people's stories, I wouldn't be surprised if it happened eventually to one of mine, but I also have no worries about Kershaw replacing it PDQ for free.
