Does this also happens to your Umnum?

Hello people:)

I've been looking to add an Umnumzaan to the CRk collection so, like always, i've been watching some videos about it.
It is a lovely looking folder and i'm really looking forward to get one.
However while doing research on the knife i came across to this disturbing video!

I know i know, spine wacking isn't recommended nor needed but i can't help to feel a little concerned about it.
I mean, i don't spine wack my knives but i can see me using it to cut something and all of a sudden hitting the spine by accident on something. The damage from a thing like that could be horrible!

So, what do you guys have to say about it?

Thanks for looking:)

Does my own personal experience sway the subjects of the threads in here?

Seriously, when I sent my first Sebenza to CRK for the first time(stripped screws due to my own brand of stupidity) x amount of Warranty threads popped up that had me biting my nails until it was returned like a brand new knife...

Now I have an Umnumzaan in route and what do ya know, this video pops up, insert nails in mouth....:D

Luckily I'm a tad more subjective these days and have learned to go by my own experiences taking only bits and peices with a grain of salt from others. (and luckily I can't recall a time I've ever spine whacked any knife, let alone one that took a hearty chunk out of my bank account):p

US-STEEL, my nails and my blood pressure thank you for your reply:thumbup:

Is this video legit? The first thing I thought as I watch it was, "What the heck did he do to that knife to get it to respond that way?". I just can't imagine that an unaltered Umnumzaan would fold like that.

Just tried with my Umnum on a stick of similar or bigger size and no problems:thumbup: then it turned it into a feather stick

I just put a bunch of dents in my workbench testing my Umnumzaan. I don't think I could swing it hard enough to cause it to fail.

That's odd, I don't have a dog in this fight since at this time I no longer have any CRK's after giving my large Sebenza 21 to my oldest son. If there is a problem with your knife CR would take care of the it plus usually when one is cutting the pressure is on the edge of the blade not the spine. When I was younger I used a Slipjoint most of the time and it never closed on my hand during use so I'm not sure why all these spine whacking videos are so scary to some.

It's just my opinion but I think many of us worry far too much about lock strength even under abuse like conditions...I don't beat on my other tools in a matter in which they'll not be used. The Zaan shouldn't have closed just because he hit the spine on his finger yet we have no idea what has been done to this knife before this video was made. I wouldn't worry about it, I don't see many threads here about how someone was badly injured by their CRK, ZT, Strider, BM or Spyderco when it closed on them during a cutting task.

I would not believe that video at all, prove that the knife is un-altered. There is not a single close up to prove the lock-bar has not been screwed with or anything like that. Believe this video and believe that the magicians really do make an elephant disappear!

Isn't that the Umnumzaan that was stabbed through a refrigerator about 300 times, and was subjected to all kinds of other random stupidity?

Then the moron posts up that video by itself, and it looks like the lock is failing....

The knife was fantastically abused before it started doing that.

I HAVE had a couple folders do that (and not with spine whack either, just pressure) right out of the box....but they most certainly were not CRKs.

Thats a good thing, because hard spine whacks are most certainly abusive. I hope you would not expect a company to stand behind a product that was subjected to such things.

Yes thats the one! That knife was returned to CRK where they discovered the lock had been adjusted. The guy had bent the lock bar outward reducing the spring tension and causing the knife to lock up earlier. He was trying to make it easier to close. Thats why Chris started adding the discs on the umnum. Because people do ridiculous crap like that.

So from what i understand this fortunately is a knowned isolated case.
What's the story on this knife?
Can someone clarify?

Here we go again.

Who knows what happened to that knife before the camera was turned on.

Any knife can be made to fail when abused.

The Zaan is a great knife. Buy and use with confidence. ;)

I am pretty sure this vid has been discussed here before and it was found that there was abuse on the knife prior to the video.

I also think CRK asked the knife to be sent in for inspection as well.

It's been a while though, so sorry if my memory remembers this incident incorrectly.

Ill never know if my knive do that cause ill never do anything like that. Plain fucking stupid if you ask me.

Im also pretty sure that's exactly what happened.

Mantzao, you should be able to find the original thread around here somewhere.
It was a few years ago if I recall.

The knife was abused and the lock up was modified. then it was returned to CRK for inspection. CRK posted the results of their inspection which said 1. The knife was abused 2. the lock up was modified which was part of the cause for failure. If you want more info you will have to search for it. There is a whole long thread about this topic.

Pretty much exactly what he said. Every six months or so somebody digs this video up again.
