As some of you already know I am new to this forum and to knives in general. I am looking for a nife for casual carry / everyday use, but I prefer a larger blade than most do for everyday knives. I mean I don't currently carry a knife on a regular basis, but while looking at knives to purchase, I have decided that I want a knife in the 3 to 4 inch blade area. In airports etc, I just won't carry a knife. I have asked about the Military Model in my previous posts, but after looking at knives, I think I might be more happy with a Spyderco with a stainless steel handle. I know that G-10 is a proven material, and I understand that its benefits include better grip and lighter wieght. However, I prefer the look of the stainless and I don't mind the extra wieght. For my use I think that the stainless will be better for me. I won't rule out G-10, but I would rather have the stainless handle. I have also heard a lot of good things about CPM 440 stainless steel for blades. I think that the Military Model would be great for me if it came in a stainless handle model. I still haven't seen the Military Model in person, and I have heard so many good things about it, so I haven't ruled it out. So, with all of this being said, here is my question.... Does Spyderco make a folder with a blade length ranging somewhere between 3 and 4 inches (or close to it) with a CPM 440 blade and a stainless steel handle?

i carried a stainless serrated police for quite a while and loved it...hope this helps.

First let me say "welcome" to the forums!

I think the only knife in that size was the Bladeforums.com blue G-10 handle Native. I don't think there is one with a steel handle. We'll get a confirmation here soon.

The stainless Native has AUS-10, which I have to say I have been very impressed with. I carry a Native II in my daily rotation.

Check out the Police or Endura models with stainless steel handles. You'll have your choice of plain or serrated edge.

Although heavier than G-10 versions, these ss models are very comfortable for IWB carry they're smoother and thinner. I find the Endura more useful for general cutting chores while the Police seem to be more suitable for self-defense purposes.

Of course there are comparable knives by other manufacturers but it's hard to beat the price/quality/performance/design of Sypderco's. P.S., I don't work for them. I hope this gives you a starting point as there are many others.

I don't know of any model that fits exactly what you are looking for. Try either the Lum Tanto that I have heard so many good things about or the Military, which I know first hand kicks ass.

Spyderco is THE best buy IMHO for quality knives and excellent customer service.

While the C07 Police blade is slightly over top end of your size limit, mine are ATS-55 and you asked for CPM 440. If this is not a problem for you then I would highly recommend that you look at the serrated blade model C07S and even better still there are a few around that are Blak-Ti coated. This slightly enhances grip and also makes the knife much less noticeable when clipped in the waistband or pocket. The thin profile is perfect for IWB carry. I have carried one of these daily for many years and just love them. While I always carry 2 or 3 knives and rotate between several different models and makers. However my Blak-Ti Police is my “American Express” knife – I don’t leave home without it. I own 4 now and they have served me well.

A Police IWB, a Civilian under my arm, and a Matriarch in the rear pocket and I’m a walking advertisement for the best of ATS-55.

If you must have 440V and a metal handle, then I think you need a Kershaw Boa. It's not a Spyderco, but it does have the assited opening.

Blades

The answer to your question is NO. There are NO Spyderco knives with a stainless steel handle and a CPM440V blade. Only G-10 models (notably a Military, with a 3 7/8" blade, a Starmate, with a 3 3/4" blade, and the limited edition G-10 Natives, with a 3 1/8" blade) sport this premium steel. The only exception happens to be the FRN Native (Fiberglass Reinforced Nylon, which is a plastic-like handle frequently compared with Zytel) which is an excellent value with this premium steel.

Stainless steel handled blades in the Spyderco line usually come with an ATS-55 blade, which is considered very good quality, but obviously less so and less expensive than CPM440V.

Maybe you should reconsider your choice of a SS handle, since there are so many great knives out there, and G-10 really works out very nice. Otherwise, if I would ever get a SS knife from Spyderco, I would get the Police model. Still, this goes against your specifications since it sports a 4 1/8", ATS-55 blade. I would also consider the Rookie, which is a smaller version of the Police model and sports a 3 1/8", ATS-55 blade. Consider also the SS Native, with a 3 1/8", AUS-10 blade.

Hope this helps!

Well, I guess if all else fails, you could contact the warranty department and ask if it would be possible to buy 2 natives and have the blades switched on them, either by the factory or by you. I am not sure if they are 100% identical as they are manufactured in very different places, but it can't hurt to ask.
