Like most of you, I'm looking for an almost perfect EDC. We all know there's no perfect one out there so "almost" will have to do.

It would need to be 3 3/4", have opposing blades, one wharncliffe, one spear or clip. Both blades about the same size.
Pattern could be an equal end or some other that would work with the blade set up.
Handles should be bone or wood.

I know the Northwoods Presidential comes close but the Wharncliffe is too small and the pattern is 4" long. I also know a custom can be made but I don't want to put out all that cash. The GEC 48 Improved Trapper is close but I'm looking for opposing blades.

Is it out there somewhere? If it is...I haven't seen it.

Thanks......Bruno

Colt (or is it Rough Rider?) has an "Improved Muskrat" that may fit your needs. California clip blade on one end, Wharncliff on the other.

Schrade Walden Improved Muskrat

I believe they were 3 7/8" long. Later they made an Improved Muskrat 787 and 77OT. Those both have two clips and are 4" long. I don't know if you'll be able to find one easily, but if you look around for an Improved Muskrat like afish said you should be able to find somebody making one that's similar.

It's Rough Rider.....Just did a search and that pattern is 3 7/8". Might be the closest pattern to what I'm looking for. I'll keep looking but will order a RR and see if it works for me. Would rather 1095 steel but can't be too picky at this point.

I'll also try to track down that Schrade that Cory posted. Carbon steel and also 3 7/8".

Funny.....I forgot that I ordered a RR Improved Muskrat a few days ago and it arrived today along with a Colt Teardrop and a Frost Wild Turkey small single blade easy open. Frost looks just like GEC's #25. I'll post a pic a little later. Nice knife for less than the price of a lunch.
Really impressed with the Colt.
The RR is OK but a little big for watch pocket carry. I'm going to carry it for a while and see how it works out. It has a sheepfoot instead of a Wharncliffe but it's close enough.

Pics of the Frost.....

Bit of a wild-card, but here's a suggestion. This Queen frame, Swell Centre is under 4" and maybe somebody like Glennbad could mod it to take a Wharncliffe blade (say from CASE Wharncliffe Trapper?)

The GEC 53 Furtaker is the right set-up but bigger than you like, could you rethink that ? They come in carbon and stainless.

Modification is a good idea and probably something I'll look into.
The 53 is too big.

I did the exact same search a few weeks ago!

I'll spare you the 5 paragraphs of lead in post I had at the time of why I was looking for this, but generally; I was going from a 3.25" stockman, wanting a little more handle, wanting a sheepsfoot because I have begun using it 90% of the time, a clip the rest of the time, and Never using the third blade, so wanting to do away with it.

I wanted between 3.5” and 3–7/8” at the very most, opposite end blades, one clip and one sheepsfoot. Getting that sheepsfoot secondary is pretty rare these days... Since I make and modify a lot of knives and have the tooling to do so, I started looking at knives with a secondary easily re-ground to a sheepsfoot.

My main choices came to a Case Mini Moose, and a Case Humbback half whittler, both at 3-5/8". If you don't mind bobbing a blade, they're both worth a look. I ended up with the half whittler because of its low set blades, sunk joints, and simply being intrigued by a different than the average stockman frame shape.

Now oddly enough, After over a week online searching, I found other options only After buying the Humpback. Lol.

I did find basically perfection without modification for what I wanted, although the clip is a touch shorter than the wharncliffe, in the Tony Bose/Case collaboration Norfolk half whittler. 3.75" closed. Pattern Number:TB622009DAM Its gorgeous in that bone and the Damascus blades... Unfortunetally its also around $400... I'll never own one at that price, although its a great looker in basically the right blades.

And as has been mentioned, the Import brands like Rough Rider make a Improved Muskrat at what was my max, 3-7/8". I've Nothing against Rough Rider and might have gotten one, but it really is a bit too big for me, and Not really available in any bone that I like much..

A friend then recomended a Eye brand 54 two-blade congress. at 3-3/8" Which I had not seen before. But its a sheepsfoot and a coping blade, basically two the same..

Other than this years BF forum knife whih can't be gotten now(and from what I've seen so far, the build isn't worth the price anyway) thats about all I could come up with. There are lots of options out there if "jack knives" are your thing; both blades on one end of the frame.... why did we have to be so picky with wanting opposing blades? ;) ;) Lol.

Anyway, I hope that might help you some, and Good Luck in your search!

And in other news... I DID NOT need to see that swell center above!! ;)
Thats all I need, another one for my likes list... lol.

Ice T I have one of those CASE Humpback Halfs (not such nice bone as yours though) and it really could be a stunner knife with a different secondary, say a Sheepfoot. Man of your skill could likely transplant one from another CASE or a Wharncliffe blade alternatively. Exciting possibilities!:thumbup:

Thanks for your reply. Lots of info to consider. i just received a RR improved muskrat and also find it a bit too long for watch pocket carry at 3 7/8". Also, they use a two spring set up instead of a single spring which makes it thicker than it should be. That Bose Norfolk is a beauty and also out of my budget for an EDC.
I have a few of the S&M/Queen swell center knives but they are also 3 7/8". I'll keep looking but it looks as if I'll probably have to go with a jack pattern which will be a lot easier to choose from.

Case Tony Bose Norfolk whittler, and GEC courthouse whittler pattern 62 comes in two blade as well
Both are 3-3/4"

Case did a muskrat one year for the Tony Bose collaboration that had a clip and a wharncliffe. Case also made some in the 80's.

One of the great features of the Case-Bose Norfolk is the pivot pushing. Makes operation really smooth. Here's mine with a different cover:

Here's a CSC Muskrat that I modified. Its a tad over 4 inches, but slender and single spring so it caries really nicely. The nick on the second clip is pretty well in the center of the blade so it was easy to reshape and make a long wharncliff. CSC did also make a Hawbaker Special Muskrat with a full length wharncliff and clip on a single spring, but I couldn't find any left.

Here's the Case/Bose collab:

And here's a Case "improved" or "Hawbaker Special" muskrat. Looks like the made them going back to the late 60's. You could probably find one on eBay.
