I am sure that you all have seen the movie on Deadly Ground where Steven Sigal uses the empty pop bottle to silence his .45 ACP. Does anyone know if this actually works? Has anyone tried it? For argument sake I will say that I am asking for survival situations where you have a rifle, bottle, and tape. If this works you could silence your rifle so you can get a silent shot off then if need be one more shot afterwards. thanks Geoff.

Gunner, aaaaaaai have not personaly tried this as I have not needed a silencer, aaaaaabut I have a freind who has and said it works pretty good. If you use a subsonice load it should subdue the crack from the muzzle.

For the purposes of hunting in a relatively quiet wilderness-type area, it would be pretty much impossible to silence a rifle enough for an animal not to hear it. If you had a .22, well, maybe... You'd be better off making snares from cordage made from the pop-bottle...

or a fish trap...

OTOH, it would make it quieter. Someone who has a relatively lax range nearby and a hunting rifle want to give this one a try?

Stryver, who's actually not seen the movie...

Hi Guys...

According to Soldier of Fortune,, it is said to work.. It's been a long time,,but I believe is was tested on a few weapons including a Mac-10 and Mac-11...

From what I remember it only gives you a few rounds,,then it has to be changed...

Hi, from experience I can tell you that a .22 with a plastic bottle stuck on it and using 22 subsonic cartridges gets silenced at least 10 Db.
The real silenced 22's are made in France, there is a company that makes silenced singleshot 22 pistols that are so quit with standard 22 ammo that one hears the bullet hitting the target more then the actual shot.
I have handled and shot those silenced 22's in France and they really perform. The silencer itself is mounted completely around the barrel over the entire length of the barrel and is about 40 mm in diameter (about 15/8". The pistol version has a silencer about 12 inches long and the barrel seems to be shorter and somehow drilled with some holes to relieve pressure into the silencing material.
The silencer life is said to be unlimited.

Cheers, bagheera

In the military we had access to the silenced Colt Woodsman in .22. It was very quiet with subsonic ammo. The slide made more noise than the discharge. The wipes had to be changed out every 20 or so rounds.

They also had a variety of other weapons that were silenced. My favorite was the M3A1 Submachine gun silencer. The weapon fires a .45 and is subsonic with a whallop. Since it fires from an open bolt it sounds like a car wreck more than an explosion. Wonderful toy.

As for the improvised... the Irish silencer was fine for smaller calibers. It is a potato in a balloon shoved over the end of the weapon. It will deflect the round some so it is must be used close up. You get one round and a bag of mashed potatoes

Silencing occurs through slowing the gas as well as cooling it so anything that will allow the gas to cool rapidly while it is slowed will effect the noise level.

Modifying the noise can be as effective as quieting the thing particlarily in urban environments. That is why automobile mufflers are used in sniping in urban areas. The gunshot sounds more like a backfire than an explosion... An IC engine is just a series of explosions and you know how quiet they can be.

The other noise is the round exceeding the speed of sound. THAT shockwave can only be changed by dropping the velocity. It can be modified some with a boattail slug... but not much.

Finally, Here in Idaho you can purchase a silencer and use it at the range if you pay the transfer fee etc. It is not uncommon for folks to cap marmots with silenced .22's... keeps the noise to a minimum.

Normal disclaimers apply.

Silencers can be made from a wide variety of simple materials including aluminum cans, bubblers or soakers used on garden hoses, oil filters, pvc pipe, sprinkler risers, clog busters (used for unclogging drains, and garden tractor mufflers. There are others as well.

A good book on this topic was written by George M. Hollenback: Workbench Silencers. However, to quote Mr. Hollenback: "...putting anything on the end of a gun to reduce its noise level is a federal offense, even if it's just a pop can or plastic soft drink bottle."

That's why I'm surprised at Ron's statement:

"Finally, Here in Idaho you can purchase a silencer and use it at the range if you pay the transfer fee etc. It is not uncommon for
folks to cap marmots with silenced .22's... keeps the noise to a minimum."

Ron, what is a transfer fee?

In Finland, silencers are commonplace (although I've only recently found out that it is illegal to carry a knife in Finland--and this in a knife culture!) and it is considered to be polite to shoot your guns using a silencer so as not to disturb your neighbors.

A transfer fee is what you pay when you register or transfer ownership of a controlled firearm or accessory, such as a fully auto weapon, a silencer, or something like a stock made for a pistol which turns it into a rifle. Walt

Thanks Walt.

We also have a local machine gun club that likes to put on shows.

I don't have any of the fun stuff.... it's not much good for deer/Elk hunting or upland game

It is nice to know that if I want it I can legally buy it.

I don't know if they are leagal in Iowa, but I want one because at this rate (my shooting) I would probibly loose my hearing.

but I also use hearing protection, so I mean wouldn't a silencer just be considered a "safty feature" so you can still hear?
