Does your blade move when closed?

Ok, so I sanded the "choil" area on the blade that contacts the stop pin when closed. Did this in in attempt to remove rust that was in the machining marks when it arrived. Quite annoyed at this. I was aware of the roughness of Emersons, but i didn't count on it contributing to rust. Anyway, I digress.

Since getting to know my new Mini Com, as i was playing with it as an impact weapon, I noticed that when the blade is closed, and in place, I can squeeze it slightly, and it will move closed a bit further, then return when I release it. Does this description make sense? So I'm wondering if maybe I sanded off too much. Highly doubt it, cuz the rust isn't even gone, and I can still see the deep machining marks, but I figured I would ask other owners out there.

Is it normal for the blade to move slightly further into the handle when closed? Does anyone else's knife do this?

Thanks!

Check the g10 spacer, it sounds like something else is making contact to the edge before the choil can hit the stop pin.

As far as the rut looking stuff, I am not convinced it is rust. It might be the way the knife is when the blade comes out from heat treat. I noticed the same thing on the spine of other knives.

Thanks for checking. I doubt I sanded off that much though. Are yours MiniComs?

Nope, Gentleman Jim, A-100, CQC-10 and a CQC-15.

What RD said. Spyderco has/had the same issue, which turned out to be discoloration from the cutting process.

I checked the spacer, and it appears the cutting edge is hitting it like IGotStabbed described. This is what I was wondering. I doubt I sanded the choil enough to do this though. I barely touched it and I gave up after like 3 minutes when I could still see the orange rust-like substance in the machining lines. I wonder if this is worth sending to Emerson over, especially considering the cost to do so....

The fact you brought it up leads me to think it bothers you. If you are bothered send it to Emerson they will take care of you.

What bothers me is not knowing if the knife is normal or not. The thought of having to spend more money and time on a 200 dollar knife bothers me too.

I suppose my best bet is to just keep using it until the knife has issues that actually limit its function, then trust Emerson's lifetime warranty to make it right.

Thanks for the responses y'all.

James, you knife should be fine. As I mentioned, I have other knives that have the orangish color in the fine lines of the blade tang. It's from the heat treat, and should not have any impact on the function at all.

I don't think that there's anything to worry about. Just a little discoloration from the cut/grind. Some people worry about poor annealing, but I have never heard any issues...just complaints. I can't say that I've ever pushed my Emerson's to the limit, but I have put them through their paces. No breakages, no lock-up slips, and certainly no broken tips. Sit back, relax and enjoy.

...and if for some reason things start to feel off, then send it in. I just see it as character; a birthmark so to speak.

Thanks guys.
Again, tho, I'm no longer worried about the discoloration. I'm worried about the fact that the blade moves into the handle further off the detents and hits the g10 spacer instead of the lock pin when I squeeze it.

Checked both mine (cqc7v & cqc14) no issues. If the blade is hitting the spacer, just send it to Emerson, they will fix it, no problem.

I'm pretty sure you filed too much of the choil away. All the parts are machine cut from the factory and so they all fit perfectly new.

Triple checked this knife again, and I think it just has a loose tolerance between the detents and stop pin. I think I'm just gonna use it and enjoy it. Done overthinking this lol.
Thanks to all who posted!

my blade has perfect blade centering when its tightend all the way, but the looser the pivot gets the closer it gets to the non locking side. it will even rub if i let it. but that never really bothered me

also the tip of my cqc 13 is orangeish but it looks like its from heat. i figured the tip got really hot when they were grinding it bc it is so thin
