Does ZDP-189 normally patina?

I'm usually really careful about keeping my blades clean, but the last time that I used my ZDP Endura I must have forgotten to clean the blade well before putting it back into it's Spyderpac slot This morning I pulled it out and about half the blade on both sides had discolored and I can't clean it off. I didn't think that ZDP would stain that easy. Not sure what I cut the last time that I used it, but I'm sure that I at least wiped the blade off afterwards.

I'm guessing that I'll have to force a patina to the whole blade now to try and even it out.

Any thoughts?

Some metal polish should take that right off if you don't want patina.

That is odd.....zdp is 20% chromium, and I have never had any hint of patina or anything come up on mine. What did you cut??
Simple metal polish should take it right our hopefully.

Edit to add ^^^ you beat me to it!

I really don't remember. Probably a sandwich or something like that. I KNOW that I wiped it off, but maybe enough was left on the surface to stain.

Weird

ZDP-189 has 20% chromium but most of it goes to carbide formation not corrosion resistance. It is stainless steel but not all that stainless compared to others.

I had a similar situation with my sog trident before. not a big issue at all. Though it made me wonder, maybe sometimes portray of corrosion resistance properties in some stainless steels are kinda over exaggerated?

Well, I dug out my can of Cape Cod cloths that I use on my watches and the stains on the blade came right off. Looks just like new now. I was surprised, because regular cleaners weren't even touching the patina. Well, that was a learning experience. First that ZDP would stain as easily as it did, and second that Cape Cod took it off just as easy.

I actually have some small rust spots on my Dragonfly 2, from my sweat.

Knife looks great.
Why would you NOT want patina?
Id like a Super Blue Caly just to see the patina develop with use.....

Some of us just don't like or desire patinas or any corrosion despite liking mostly non stainless alloys and tool steels. Give me a good satin finish anyday. :)

I have a ZDP endura as well and I cut some eggplant and tomatoes with it the other day and I got rust the next day in a few spots. Metal polish did NOT get it off no matter how hard i rubbed it. the rust was gone but where the rust was theres a little patina. Ive since bought and applied EEZOX to it and that should keep it safe for a while..

I may force a patina eventually for the hell of it though. I was actually surprised how fast it got rust on it, i was under the impression it was more stainless.

My Caly 3 Super Blue has a nice, mostly uniform patina. I just didn't like how it looked on this Endura. If it covered the entire blade I might have liked it better. Actually, now that I know that ZDP will take a patina I might experiment with it.
