Here are two milestones in Tim Hancock's knifemaking career, one of them
he considers as the beginning of his Dog Bone Bowie designs....

On the right:
"Dog Bone Bowie #1", 1997
The blade is a cut style Ladder pattern Damascus of 1095 and 203E with a black enamel
finish for maximum contrast. It has a well defined clip and a spanish notch.
The fittings are a combination of Damascus and nickel-silver spacers. The Damascus portions
of the 5 piece spacer are grooved and flanked by nickel-silver spacers. The pommel is wrapped
with and fixed with pins and a threaded Damascus finial. The buttons and ecuctheon inlays
are also nickel-silver. The sheath is nickel-silver formed to the likeness of the blade and
has Damascus trim.
This is what Tim says about the Bowie: "This was the beginning of the Dog Bone Bowies for me.
The knife won The Mastersmith award for the "Best Antique Bowie" at the Blade Show in 1997.
That year I won four major awards at the show including "Best of Show". This piece was a very
important milestone in my career, it has a quality about it, a museum like feeling that inspired
me ever since".

Overall length 14 1/2" (368 mm), blade length 10" (254 mm).

On the left:
"Black Dog Bone Bowie", 1998
This Dog Bone blade started out as 14 layers of 1084 and 15N20 that were forge welded,
twisted and rolled into a jelly roll, then drawn out transversely and cut to create a
Ladder pattern Damascus. Tim then forged the blade to shape. The multifaceted blade
has a black enamel finish for maximum contrast. The nickel-silver fittings include the
tang-wrap, guard, ferrule, file-worked frame, pommel-wrap, buttons and finial.
The escutcheon plates are mother of pearl inlaid into the ebony scales.
The sheath is made from leather that has a rawhide core and mounted with a nickel-silver
tip and throat. This knife won "Best Damascus of Show" at the 1998 Blade Show West,
and also secured the Blade Magazine "Best Hand Made Knife" award for the 1998
"Best Damascus of the Year". This is the smallest of Tim's Dog Bone Bowies to date.
Overall length 12" (305 mm), blade length 7 1/2" (190 mm).

Both knives are from the collection of John D. Boldan

Both are beautiful.. My personal tastes would steer me towards the '98 knife, (left), if asked to choose... The photo shows them both in great detail and clarity.. Thanks David....

Both absolutely beautiful bowies. The one on the left is very unique in both blade profile and damascus pattern. The black enamel finish used to highlight the damascus pattern on these two bowies was popular among the top ABS smiths in the mid to late nineties.

One of my early Fisk utilized this process which produces a very nice effect.

I love closer views......... Don't you?

All the best,
