Dog Brothers

It's fast and furious and pretty interesting seeing various less lethal weapons matched up against each other. The skill ranges from novice to some of the top guys. On occasion, testosterone levels will flare up (even in the women) but, for the most part, you see mutual respect and cameraderie. Guro Denny and the others do a pretty good job of "reffing" and making sure things don't go too far.

The Dog Brothers have their annual training camp and gathering coming up in July in El Segundo, CA. Check www.DogBrothers.com.

I've attended many of them over the past few years and brought a fighter to a couple. The knife fights are a lot less likely to produce injuries than those in which sticks, staff, or a two-handed rattan sword are used. It is way too rough for an old, fat, slow, marginally coordinated guy like me (although I do feel that I benefit from Guro Crafty Dog's regular classes).

The fighter I brought to two Gatherings was in his early 20s and had about 7 yrs of training under Vunak and others (he was a full instructor under Vunak and had his own school). He did well in his fights, including a couple against Top Dog, but still had several nasty bruises, etc.

Guro Crafty told me that when the original Ultimate Fighting Championships were getting ready to go on pay-per-view, they approached the Dog Bros. about the idea of an exhibition stick fight as a warmup event. However, after seeing tapes of Gatherings, they said something to the effect of "You guys are crazy---that's way too violent for us!"

Maestro,

I didn't understand your question. If you explain in more detail what information you are asking for, I'll try to respond.

AS I don't live in the U.S.A , I live in Italy so some time's I don't understand your argument's, for example DOG BROS , I'v never hered of them and I don't know what they are. Thank you any way.

Maestro,

No problem and no need to be sorry---your English is a heck of a lot better than my Italian!

If you check out www.dogbrothers.com , it will give you some background on the group and its leader, Guro Marc Denny. Basically, the Dog Brothers practice full-contact stickfighting with fencing helmets and light padding. It may not be 100% totally realistic stick combat, but it is about as close as you can come without encountering a lot of serious injuries. Even with the light protection, significant injuries occur.

I believe that there is a Bog Brothers instructor in Switzerland and a couple people in Italy who have had at least a little bit of exposure to the Dog Brothers. If you e-mail Guro Marc, he could probably refer you to someone with whom you could discuss the Dog Brothers program/approach/philosophy.
