With the temp hovering just below 90 degrees and the humidity at 80%, I did what any normal person would do….. went rambling through the wilderness. Having suffered from Rocky Mtn Spotted Fever the entire month of July, my woods time had really taken a hit. I had a few things that I wanted to get done.

First, I wanted to try out a different type of pack that I picked up and I needed to put my new Gray Wolf custom to work. Also, with deer season fast approaching, I needed to do some scouting. So, off we go.

I’ve been looking for a smaller means to carry stuff on my day hikes. The bigger the pack, the more unnecessary crap I bring alone. Enter the Eno Possum Pocket. This little sling pack, man purse, hippy satchel, what have you, is designed to carry a doublenest hammock and straps. I replaced the shoulder strap with a maxpedition 2” and the bag fits just what I need and nothing else.

Today’s load included 32 oz of H2O, my Laplander, meat, wet wipes, first aid kit, fire kit, some cordage, and my seat (trash bag).

Bacon Jerky. It is bodacious!

It carries very comfortably and hey, it’s camo. That’s manly, right?

My Wilder Forge XL necker, which I never wear around my neck, rides comfortably on the strap.

I have also down sized my fire kit for day hikes. The snus tins carry a mini bic, PJCB, jute, fatwood, and storm matches.

Now, for the tools. Besides the Laplander and the Wilder XL, I brought along my new Gray Wolf and as always, my SAk Farmer. I really like this Gray Wolf. I decided to do a small split wood fire. Did I mention it was like 90 degrees outside?

Splitting the small logs with a baton was effortless

Drilling was a breeze and I carved my baton into a crude spindle

It’s really hot and humid and I was feeling lazy, so I passed on the bow drill and used the firesteel

After about an hour of wood work it is still shaving sharp

I headed up to some ridge tops to scout for sign. The creek is pretty low, typical for late summer in North Carolina.

The best sign that a hunter could find, a mature doe. She was bedded down when I first jumped her, but I was able to get within 25 yards of her on a stalk. She was quiet curious of me, as are most preseason slick heads.

Until next time, happy trails and thanks for looking.

Your lucky to be able to get out and relax. Looks like a great time. Thanks for sharing it with us.

I don't see that Grey Wolf knife on this site. which one is it?
TIA!
be safe... Ted

It's not listed but I believe Aaron calls it a "utility". Just email him and ask for the model that wooly bugger has two of (green micarta and ironwood). He should know which one.
