Dog Father or Ranger RD9

I would like some input. In a head to head, which of these is the best?

Both are made from tough hard use steels. Both will work. Which you like best will decide. S7 is a tougher steel, so the Dogfather would ultimately be tougher. But you may never notice the difference.

At what task?? I suspect Cobalt believes you're looking for a solid, tough outdoor chopper...

If Cobalt is correct in his assumption, then I agree with his assessment. I have both a Ranger RD9 and a Dog Father (have had the Ranger longer).

Yes. I was looking for a solid, outdoor durable knife. Thank you, gentlemen. I appreciate your expertise.

I can’t say for sure that it would make a difference but the tang on the DogFather is made narrower to go inside their handles. The RD series maintains nearly the same width and has slabs of Micarta on each side for a handle. I have seen both called full tang but I’ve got to think that the RD series would be harder to break. I understand that this is but one aspect (and there are many more) off the two knives design but I would think that it is an important one.

Most likely either knife would do a great job at whatever task you needed done. :)

Both good knives imho. However, for the product I have ordered and held in my own two hands, the fit and finish of the scrappers was a tad better than that of the Ranger product. Not to denigrate Ranger -- or Justin -- by any means. He makes terriffic stuff and he is truly a pleasure to deal with. And to his credit, if you want the personal touch, go with the Ranger. My $0.02

If you go out to the Scrapyard board, there is a thread out there with pics showing how much the Dog Father will bend without breaking. They use a bar on it for increased leverage and still couldn't get it to break. As such, IMO, the tang on the Dog Father will have nothing to do with it breaking if "breaking it" is even realistically possible.

I do NOT own any of the RD series, and they may be equally impractical to break in real-life situations.

Man, it’s amazing how much that knife will bend without breaking; they must add Wham-O Super Balls to the steel. That would come in handy; I could chop branches from around corners. :D I’m just kidding. Considering the people that who are behind the design and manufacturing of these knives you know that they have to be tough as hell.

I have two RD-9s and just got a dogfather. The DF will out chop the RD-9 and has a more comfortable handle. I like Rangers knives. I have an RD-6, too. If you want to see a comparsion, go to the scrapyard knives forum.

I did a small chopping/splitting test with a DOG FATHER, RTAK II and an RD-9. I felt the DOG was the best as far as ease of chopping and ergonomics. The RTAK II was close behind but took slightly more effort. The RD-9 was not in the same class. Way to much effort was expended chopping with the RD-9 for the amount of work accomplished.
Splitting small logs with both the DOG and RTAK II was easy with a baton. The RD-9 had a rough time, most of the coating was scraped off, the tip was bent and its success rate was poor. If I were to pick one as my BIG knife, it would be the DOG FATHER hands down.

Cobalt your sure a good lookin woman, mmm good

I’m glad that you like your new Scrap Yard Dog Father; I will be purchasing the Scrapper 6 and the Dog Father sometime in the near future. I’m very surprised that you bent the tip on a Ranger RD9 by just chopping wood. Have you contacted Justin at Ranger yet about the problem with the RD9? I’m sure that he would be happy to take of the problem as he is a great guy to do business with and stands behind his product.

I’ve read good things about the owners of Scrap Yard as well just this past week on the forums at their website. A gentleman has just received his new Dog Father and if I remember correctly he was chopping branches in his lawn and it chipped off a small piece of the blade and he was concerned as any of us would be. It wasn’t long before someone from Scrap Yard responded to his post and said that they believed that it was possibly an air bubble in the blade/steel. The person form Scrap Yard stated that if that was the indeed the problem that it was a very rare one but that they would take care of the problem. I went to the forums at Scrap Yard this morning to find the post that I’m speaking of so that I could give the link but I didn’t see it right away, there have been a ton of post recently with people just receiving their new blades and being very excited. I’m sure that if anyone needs more information they could ask about it on the Scrap Yard forum.

I have both and have used both

Which one do I like better??

Prolly my Rd9...BUT the DF seems more of a dedicated chopper to me where as the Rd9 seems more well rounded for different stuff

I would say the Dog Father is overall the better of the 2, not to detract anything from Ranger though, they are extremely nice blades very tough and hold an edge very well. But in S-7 you will NOT find a comparable blade for the price combined with one of the best warranties in the business you have the recipe for greatness! Dog Father is the way to go.
