I am not a happy camper. My dog Grendal got sprayed tonight by a skunk. He is a indoor dog, now the whole place stinks. Unfotunately I cant put him outside or anything so he's in the mud room but that doesnt help much. He is a good dog mostly black lab. He can catch rabbits and I guess skunks too.

Oh well I'll live. Not sure my sense of smell will though:eek::)

Dang William , sorry to hear that. I might be able to help, I got sprayed a few times when I was a little boy checking live traps and my Great Grandmother would pour canned tomato juice on me. It worked pretty good, poor dog probally dont know whats going on,LOL

My wife used to have a pair of Beagles who purposely went after skunks. The best thing she found was a recipe from Popular Science magazine. I can't find a link to the original, but use the recipe found here and it'll de-skunk your pup in short order.

The trick is that the chemicals called thiols in the skunk spray will pick up easily available oxygen. The peroxide and baking soda will oxidize the thiols and neutralize the stink. Nothing else is going to work well.

Good luck!

My ex-inlaws has a German Shepard named Gus. They lived on a farm in eastern Montana, where there are lots of skunks. When Gus was a pup a skunk bit him on the nose when he checked it out. After Gus grew up he killed every skunk he came across, he was an outside dog for sure, don't believe he was ever in a house. He latter went blind from all the spraying he took from killing skunks.

I trap most winters. I always catch a lot of skunks.
The recipe Deker gave works. Tomato juice works as well and is easier.

Hey thanks guys. I dusted him with soda last night I guess I will go get some peroxide.

We let Grendal run about the farm as he pleases when he needs to do his stuff. He has only gotten into a porcupine once (so far :) ) and that was while I was away at a show.
Of course I have been through that a bunch when I was kid on my parents farm.

Thanks again

I used ketchup and spaghetti sauce as it was the tomatoey stuff I could find at my parents cabin when my dog got skunked and it worked pretty good.

I tried the peroxide and soda. All I can say is wow instantly better. I have tried the tomato juice thing before and it helped but this was amazing. Thanks guys.

The Peroxide, baking soda, and Dawn dish soap will give you a good start. Use eye protection when you mix this stuff. Follow the peroxide mix with a product called "Natures Miracles" which is an enzyme that will help knock most of the rest of it out.
My wife has a pet grooming business, about 25 years experience de-skunking dogs.
