Since the current events of hurricane Katrina my family has been getting their "preparedness" gear together. My wife and I have always had ours and the rest of our respective families are asking us what to do. That's kind of nice since I have been pestering them all for years to do it.

This all got me to thinking of adding to our packs metal Dog Tags/I.D Tags to ours. So in the event of an emergency my wife and I could put these on. If we become separated, incapacitated, need to "prove" who we are, or dead, there is at least some basic information on us at all times and more durable than my wallet contents and my wife does not carry a wallet anyhow. Also, when folks are in stressful situations they may forget simple things. So we will also be puting in separate contact information for family and friends in the actual kits, not on the tags obviously.

Anyway, I am not certain I would want my Social Security number on these tags. I was thinking simply Name, Address, Phone Number, maybe even Drivers License Number.

Embossed or debossed?

Suggestions, comments?

Not just for you and wife but kids too. There are a number of kids alone from Katrina who are not ID'd. You might also put medical info , diabetic etc, on the tag.

That's a very good point about tags for people's kids. We don't have any, but I think it's a very good point. Also, medical type stuff would be worthwhile as well. I know they used to put blood type and religious affiliation on them. For us we have none, religious affiliation that is .... we do have blood however.

Have to remember the tags aren't very big and the information needs to fit and make sense to whomever is reading it. Not sure how many lines of information will fit.

Yam, if you are a true knife knut you will want one of these titanium dog tags. I wear mine all the time on a regular dog tag bead chain. I have the small size (with the dragon design:)). Mine has my name, TX Lic(drivers license number), name of a close friend, her phone number. You could probably get more info on the larger size. Regular dog tags would be much cheaper but you lose the cool factor. I am AB+ which is the only blood type that will accept any type so that was not an issue. Unless you are in an extreme situation, medical personnel will always type you before a transfusion anyway.

Well, if you want, you could get two tags. One for personal information, and one for medical. It'd get a little expensive if you go with the titanium tags, though. I'd suggest plain ol' stainless if you want more than one. Even though stainless would be awesome, it's really not cost-effective.

Keep in mind that a social security number IS NOT a valid form of identification (nor is it a legal one); your SSN will be recycled when you die. A driver's license number would be more useful. It'd also be a good idea to keep a photocopy of all of that useful stuff in your pack... preferably in one of those waterproof document holder thingies... That way if you lose your wallet in the panic, you've got a copy of your license and all that jazz.

Brigade Quartermasters has great prices on dog tags and a big selection of types/colors. I've been thinking about getting some just for fun.

www.roadid.com

They have regular dog tags, wrist/ankle, and shoe tags. They're only $20-25 and ship free. I've got an ankle tag that I wear whenever I'm running or biking. Even if I'm out with other people, I've realized that they don't necessarily know how to contact my familary or know any medical history or drug allergies. It's very unobtrusive and comfortable but should also be easily found by emergency personnel during their assessment.

i get my tags from http://www.1800nametape.com/usnscc.htm

cheap, fast turnaround time.

the ones i wear have:
name
ssn
blood type
religious pref

i have others on my backpack and keychain that say

name
address (po box)
cell phone

dog tags are a smart and efficient method of ID. it's a shame they are becoming "trendy" and are losing their purpose.

on a neat note, i heard that US issue dog tags are made of a special alloy that doesn't melt? as in, if you crash and burn in a blackhawk, your tags will stay intact? if so, that's neat. and sad. but neat.

I have had my dog tags fer about a year now. i have one laced on my boot, with my name, address year of birth ss. and no mri's. and oneon my neck that never is taken off.

I wear dog tags when I hike.I like their durability. I also don't like to cary my wallet in the woods cause I hike through water a lot and don't want to get my money,Id,chicks phone#s wet. :D

I've had great luck with roadid and they give you plenty of room to put information on. Nice product, fast service.

No SSN, but name, address, emergency phone number and blood type.

Get two for each member of the family and put one on each shoe.
