Just finished this up for a customer. I still have some very minor touch up/clean up to do, but its just about time to send it off to its new home.

Blade: 8 1/2",differentially heat treated 52100
Guard: Nitre blued mild steel with engraving
Handle: Frame construction with Desert Ironwood scales and Nickel Silver pins

NICE!!!!! Those pins must have been a PITA to do, Ed;)

Not my cup of T. But judging from the pic it's very well executed. Beautiful piece of ironwood!

Nice work.

Kind regards,

Jos

Ya know, only another knifemaker would understand just how much of a pain all those pins really are! I actually wound up measuring out and drawing a grid on the handle in order to get the spacing correct.....then about a 1/2 dozen #52 bits later.....I got all the holes drilled.

What really gave me fits on this one was the guard....I had to make four before everything came out just right. That's OK though.....it gave me 3 times to learn what NOT to do! :p

Would it be possible to get a look at the other side of this knife, and a look at the handle from an angle that will show the frame?

Keith,

I'll see if I can get some pics as you requested this evening, and get them posted on this thread.

More to come!

Ed - you're so right on the spacing. If you get all the holes nice and clean, but ths spacing is off, it really detracts from the overall look. This is a super-nice bowie.

Pinned handles are very practical and I like them a lot. The knife pictured had been thrown many times, (the blade's even a little crooked) and you can see the cracks in the handle, however the scales are still very securely fasted to the tang. And yes, I know, it looks like a penis.

And, Ed, at the risk of :foot:, I must point out that I think your knife would look especially nice if the handle was faceted, and if there was an escutcheon plate.:)

as always....clean as a whistle.....it's not my style but i cn appreciate all the work that went into it...great job.....ryan

Ed really classic great looking piece. The angle of the photo I can not really see the clip does it have one. Beautiful knife

Here's an image of the handle frame as Keith requested. Not the best shot, but after 1/2 dozen tries, it was about the best I could come up with. Nothing too fancy, just textured.

I agree with many of the suggestions given... I would have liked to facet the handle, and employ more engraving, but it wasn't within the client's wishes or budget. I've got an idea for a bowie of this variety for the 09 ABS Expo...that will be "fully decked out". ;)

Very nice, Ed. Does the guard look the same when viewed from the other side? I can see that guard being a bear to make.

Keith,

Yes, its the same on both sides. And your right, it was a bear! I wound up making four guards before I was happy with the results. The first three looked great until I mounted them on the tang/blade, and because of very minor differences in how I ground the top and bottom, the quillions did not align perfectly with the centerlines of the blade and handle. It was one of those where at first glance everything looked good, but after studying it for a few moments, something just didn't seem "right". I finally built a special jig to measure the centerline of the guard and got it right. Those types of guards are very time consuming to make...which I knew going into it, but I'm also very anal about having everything just right, so it took a bit longer. Thats OK though.....if its going out my shop door, its gotta be "right". :)

We'll see if I can pull off the one I have in mind for the 09 ABS Expo.:jerkit:

Ed,
That really did turn out fantastic!!!
Nice to see you didn't really need the suicide hot-line on this one!!!!! :)
It just goes to show, all that screaming and yelling really does work..

Great Job,

Steve

A pleasure to see ED.
Nice selection of design elements and fit/finish looks impeccable.

Very clean
