Dogproof Garbage Cans?

I know we have some real mutt-lovers and DIY'ers around here. The Mrs. has said that we have to get a garbage can *gasp* inside our house!
We've given up on indoor garbage cans due to our lovable 65# terror, Rosie. A Pitt/Brittany Mix. Too smart, too strong, too creative...

I am looking at bearproof garbage cans.

Maybe one of those metal big home improvement store garbage cans with the lids that pop on...and something like a hasp/latch and padlock.

Ideas? Recommendations? A big welded 14ga steel bear box would do it but seems needlessly expensive.

The screw-top horse feed containers are dog resistant but not dog proof though they work fairly well for normal tasks... and they're hard to get into.

Thanks for your schemes in advance.

Cordially,

We have a plastic can, a large one we keep in barn for horse grain. It has side handles that latch the lid down and also rubber gizmos that latch onto the handles so they can't unlatch. Short of chewing through which would seem difficult I think it would be dog proof.
I'm out of town but I can take a pic when I get home.

works for me.

(actually my dog completely ignores the swing lid trash container in the kitchen, does not beg at the table, and i could (and have) leave a ham sandwich on my computer desk, leave and come back later & it's still there. she doesn't bark after i leave, or when people come to visit, tho she will if you wind her up playing & get her all excited. she absolutely hates pussycats and birds in the garden tho.)

No such thing as a "Bear Proof" garbage can... I've seen them flip over my 4 yard dumpster... so now I park my Kubota with the bucket pressed down on top of the dumpster and it keeps them out.

It wouldn't work against a Pitt/Brittany mix though because eventually Rosie will figure out how to operate the tractor and raise the bucket..... :D

Get you a metal one, and run a wire of 220v to it, then they'll leave it alone, just don't forget to turn it off before you grab it..!:D

We built cupboards under the sink with a flat platform that slides out on 100 lb drawer slides and put a regular kitchen garbage can on it. We also use a baby latch.

Looks a lot better than a garbage can sitting in the kitchen and also nothing that my Neapolitan Mastiff can "accidently" knock over and jump on.

Put the metal garbage can up on a pedestal high enough the dog cannot get into it or knock it over. Put a bungee cord around the metal garbage can to keep it from being tipped over.

Some excellent suggestions. I'll update with pics when we finally figure out an engineered solution.
Some specific responses:

Jens Schuetz: She's already gotten into baby-locked upper cabinets. This solution might work well with a very serious latch like a gate latch or similar. This is under consideration.

Bawanna: I'm seriously considering a can like you have mentioned. I don't trust her not to chew through the side of the bin, however. She chews through tuna fish cans to get the goodies inside. Insanity.

kronckew: You're a very lucky person. A ham sandwich on the computer desk would be gone so fast you wouldn't believe. She's after all garden critters, barks at the door (good dog) and all manners of other spoilt dog behavior. She's certainly not to blame.. *whistles innocently*

timcsaw: You have truly understood the severity of this situation. I appreciate your acknowledgement of the capabilities of our adversary :)

1adam12: We actually do like the dog ;)

Shann: I love your idea, if only I had planned ahead when I just redid the kitchen cabinets. To be determined!

Bufford: I may incorporate a bungee cord into the solution..

You guys are excellent! I'm very impressed with the in-jun-nooity! As I expected...

Wow. I have a friend that had a basset hound he rescued from street life, nothing was safe.
First thing that comes to mind is a Yeti cooler, ($$$$ I know) then remembered a friend in CO has bear proof trash cans. Saw one for $229 at Homie Deport.
Good luck. WDL

Rescued from the street life, nothing is safe... I think I see a trend here. Our dog was found fending for herself in a parking lot - poor thing.

My younger dog is a rescue as well, lab-springer mix, too smart and too curious for his own good, and nothing is safe around the house. My older dog on the other hand is a pure-bred lab and sometimes doubt he remembers which dish is food and which is water.

I can leave all five of my dogs in the house with a full garbage can and lay a steak on the top and they wont touch it! EVER! Forget the fancy cans lids etc. I like my dogs too but 1adam12 was very close except you dont want hot dogs. Heres what you do and I guarantee it will work:

Go to the farm supply or hardware store and buy you one of them electric fence chargers. Buy the smallest cheapest one you can find. It dont take much. Oh and a small roll of aluminum wire. Theres a positive and a negative post on the charger. Forget the instructions that come with it. If you have a large plate of steel or aluminum or even a piece of cardboard covered with aluminum foil (about two feet by three feet) and put it under the can with enough sticking out so when the dog stands next to the can he has to stand on the metal plate. Connect that to the negative post of the charger with some aluminum wire or really any kind of wire. You dont have to make solid connections because high voltage only needs to touch to make plenty good contact. Duct tape it to the metal and that will work. OK...Got that? Now take a piece of wire and connect it up to an aluminum taco wrapper and fluff it up with the trash on top. Make sure it has some good smelly dog loving stuff on it. When the dog steps on the floor plate that grounds him. When he grabs the taco wrapper that completes the circuit and it will give him a good pop. For some reason once the other dogs saw what happened they would avoid the can as well. They aint dumb! Ive had at least fifteen dogs since I figured this out and not one has ever repeated that terror! They do not like electricity at all! Another thing is they wont hold you responsible for their actions because you didnt beat them or scream at them or whatever. They did it themselves! If it happens again its usually because another of your dogs decided to try it but once they get popped they'll never do it again! Its important that they think they did this to themselves and dont hold you responsible for their own actions. Those chargers usually cost 15-20 dollars and the wire is cheap as well. The rest of the materials you can pretty much piece together. I also do this for training them to stay off the countertops, window seals or wherever you dont want them. Let me know if you dont understand something and ill elaborate. The shock is high voltage but very little current so it dont hurt them at all. Oh and by all means videotape it! Were waiting!

The funny thing about dogs is you can beat them (for the record I never have) you can cuss them, ignore them, leave them home all day along and they are still happy and excited to see you when you get home.
You can abuse them and 5 minutes later they'll come up for a pet.

My wife let our dog out of the gate to where the van was parked when we got home last night. Usually she'd run off exploring. She actually jumped up into the van (she never does that) and wanted pets and attention.

Try that with any other species.

experiment:

lock your wife and your dog in the trunk of your car for an hour.

when you open it, who is glad to see you.

;)

<<SNORT>> You got me Kron. Nothing like laughing hard just as you take a gulp of coke to burn the nostrils.
