Doing Mods on Blades ......Without Stripping......

I was doing alot of reading on doing mods on Beckers to include grinding off thumb jimping and clearing off the coating on the spine to shave to make tinder bundles and for flint striking. It seems like everyone who does those mods always strips the factory coating then either dura coat, polish or patina the blade.

I hear pro and cons for stripping the blade. For myself I just did the mod on my BK7 removing the thumb jimping as well as clearing the coating off of the spine. I left the coating on just to keep the protection against the elements.

I haven't seen anyone do that; my question is can I expect the coating to chip and peel because I removed it from the spine and is that why most just strip the blade?

Thanks in adavance

Dave

you should be fine - most strip the coating in order to keep a "uniform" look.

Well, I wouldn't say 'everyone'. Though a vast majority do strip the blade when doing such mods, most probably do not 'dura coat, polish or patina'.

You'll be fine. The coating will eventually wear off through use. Flaking or chipping, not so much.

The coating is an epoxy type which resists chipping and flaking. That's why most use a chemical stripper to get it off.

I modded the spine on the 20 and just left it. I leave the coating on my choppers. Too much real estate to worry with keeping oiled and clean etc.

That was my thinking.... Keep in mind I love the bare metal look but I was worried a little more about staying on the oiling... I do take care of my gear with wiping down metal surfaces regularly but like the extra protection of the coating...

You should be just fine Dave. As mentioned above, most strip the blade for aesthetics, although many (myself included) will usually leave the metal underneath the scales "unstripped" for added protection in that area.

Show us some pics of your 7!

most def will once I get home tonight:thumbup:

As requested here is my BK7.... Nothing to write home about.... simple down and dirty
Nice!

I forgot to mention, the 7 I posted above has the swedge hump softened down and 300 grit to smooth the coating and expose the lines. No strip mods. The spine is exposed to the ramp.

I recently added jimping and removed the coating and blued a Junglas.

I never strip when doing mods on any blades....chemicals, abrasives, sparks...I wear coveralls usually......dangerous as frying bacon naked ! don't gotta tell me twice !
Sorry......I gotta be an idiot sometimes.....
