I broke down and got a couple of KnifeKits DDR 3 buton lock kits. I used the blades as a pattern to profile a nickel/1095 twist damascus blade, I made my own back filler and file worked it with a vine pattern, milled a lock from 316 stainless to replace the crummy plastic one in the kit and used some stabilized Afzelia to make the scales. I used a piece of warthog ivory to fancy up button lock. It doesn't show well, but, the spine also has vine file work and I etched it with ferric chloride that had been used with copper, which plates the nickel with a coat of copper. I then boiled it in water to fix the black on the 1095. Fun project and a good learner.

Love it! I've been thinking about modding a kit that I have, just haven't gotten around to it. Great looking package!

Thanks guys, I got 2 of the kits and a couple of extra push buttons and a extra screw kit. So, I will be doing another. I think I will take 2 pieces of D2 and clamp them one at a time between the 2 factory blades and drill and file them very carefully in the pivot area profile. Then harden them and light temper. That way I will have some very hard flat templates to clamp on to make future blades.
