Just wondering if anyone has any experience using goat horn for handle material, I just obtained a bunch through a butcher shop that processes them . Any advise on treating they curing etc or if they are suitable would be appreciated. Wasn't a pleasant job dealing with them half the head was still attached !

Thanks

I've cut up a few several years ago. Was way too thin for anything. It was a shame though as there were some beautiful colors in the horn. Might work for spacers, or for inlays.

I'd treat it like any fresh horn, after getting rid of everything but the horn let it dry for a couple years or stabilize before using.

Some years back I used a lot of Barbados goat horns. I got em from a local animal trader. He'd buy a bunch of em for hunting ranches and before he could get sold or delivered he'd always have a few croak on him. The guy that worked for him would just toss the heads up on a shed roof and let em dry for several years. The horn was a lot of work to cut up cause I just had a puny little table top band saw at the time and its tuff stuff. It was great stuff. Worked like merino sheep horn but much better coloring. Lots of black and white in stripes, spots and swirls.
