I had originally posted a question in the general knife forum. I was asking for recomendations on an assisted opening flipper operated knife with a large blade. Several people mentioned Camillus knives. I've looked on the Camillus website now and am interested in the Dominator and the Maxx series. Is the Maxx an assisted opening folder? Someone had mentioned that it's possible to convert some knives to tip-up carry. Is it possible to do that with either of my choices?

Hello

The Maxx from Camillus is unassisted and the Dominator is assisted (the Heat is a more affordable version of the Dominator). While I've never handled a Dominator, a friend has the Heat and it's a pretty sweet knife. For the price it's a hard knife to beat. I can only imagine the Dominator would be even better.

For an assisted Maxx, you'll have to get a custom from the Man himself, Darrel Ralph or spring for the Camillus Aftermath (it's assisted).

That being said, I EDC a 5.5 Cuda Maxx that is converted to tip-up carry. While an assisted model would be great (it's on the list of dream knives), my Cuda "waves" open like a dream.

I contacted Mr. Ralph though his website and he took care of the work for me. A fantastic fella to deal with, straight shooter and great communication.

If you haven't bought a Maxx yet, may I suggest you order the 7" Gibbs Maxx from Darrel Ralph directly and he can convert it to tip-up carry for you right then and there :)

Enjoy

Wow, that 7" model sure looks neat! I thought the 5.5" was a massive knife, I had no idea that there were any that were 7". But, since I'm actually planning on carrying the knife, I guess I better get one that's legal. :D Anybody know how much it would cost to get a custom assisted 5.5 Maxx? Also, I hadn't seen the Heat before. What are the major differences between it and the Dominator?

Hello Again

If you check out Darrel's site, he does give some ball park pricing. But be warned, custom knives can be pricey (IMHO he is worth every penny).

The Aftermath from Camillus would be much more affordable choice.

The biggest difference between the Dominator and the Heat are the handle material (metal vs plastic) and blade material (the heat uses AUS8 I think).

Btw, where do you live that a 5.5" blade is legal and a 7" isn't? Just curious, in Canada here there is no blade limit.

If you dont mind me asking, how much was the tip up conversion? I would love to get that done someday.

It does sounds like you may want the Aftermath. It is closely related to the Maxx Bowie, but the blade is a recurve clip-point instead of straight clip-point and it has a more ergonomic grip. And like the Dominator, the Aftermath is an assisted-opener.

I've carried an Aftermath every day since they first became available and I recommend them highly. It just barely edged out the Maxx Bowie as my favorite production knife, so I think rather well of those as well. :) And I own a Dominator for those rare occasions when I need to carry something a little smaller.

I also would recommend the Aftermath, I have one and its a great knife, though a bit... on the large size!

The Dominator is a sweet knife also. Both are very very well made and lock up nicely.

Hello Dr. Thor

The tip-up conversion was done with some other work, lock repair, fitting of bronze washers and a fold-over clip. So my price would likely be different from just a tip-up.

The price of just the tip-up converstion with fold-over clip was quite reasonable (spring for the fold-over clip it's more than worth it, allows the Cuda to be carried out of sight).

Drop Mr. Ralph a line and he'll quote you his current price for the work. He is a great guy to deal with, top notch.
