Domino & Dice: Non-standard size screws on clip?

Hey all,

I got a Domino and Dice in the mail and really like the knives. I wanted to put deep carry clips on them, but the screws that I got for all of my other Spydies do not fit. I've got MXG deep carry clips on Natives and PM2 & a Para 3. I used the slightly longer clips that MXG sent and they work fine on those knives, but they don't work on the Domino & Dice. The Domino & Dice clips screws seem slightly smaller with a different thread pitch to them.

What size screws does the Domino and Dice use?

I just tried the screws on 2 of my Domino's and they both take a T6 with no problems. Either your Torx tips are stripped or they are missmarked. I am not sure of which tips you are using but from experience that the cheap Chinese one's suck. If you haven't already get bit and driver from WIHA. Their is another German company that's good and the name also starts with a W.
Good luck

The Wiha T6 Torx bit fits the screw heads just fine. I was referring to the physical size of the screw body and the thread pitch. Do all T6 screws have the same physical dimensions regarding diameter & thread pitch (aside from length, obviously)? Apologies for the (probably) elementary question.

I was paranoid about forcing the MXG screw into the Ti frame on the knife. I'll have another look at it tonight. I thought it was odd, that the MXG screws didn't fit, but I'll have another go at it.

Any other ideas?

It's a valid question, one that I cannot answer. I will assume that a particular company would standardize there screws it's screws but i have seen different diameter & thread pitch. They refer to it as either course or fine.
It does make sense that different companies use different screws.
Call Knifekits they sell the screws.

Normal t6 screws on American and Japanese Spyderco’s are #2-56 threads. If you could measure the outside diameter with calipers or (preferably) a micrometer, you could compare it to a chart which lists the outside diameters of different threads.

I’ve never had a Taichung Spyderco with the standard spoon clip, so I don’t have any idea what the screw size would be.

The TORX recesses are used on metric and U.S. SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) fasteners. Screws are defined by their length, diameter, thread pitch, head style, material, finish, heat treatment, point style, etc. I have not noticed a large correlatiion between screw sizes and the size of the TORX recess in the head. The best way to measure TORX recesses is to buy the whole set of bits and find the tightest fit.
With screws using Allen (hex) recesses, the metric screws use a metric recess, and the SAE screws use a U.S. (fractional inch) recess.

Did you change the side the clip was on?

I changed my Dice for left hand carry and the screws were too short. Must have been how the liner was tapped on the left hand side. Anyway, contacted Spyderco and they sent me longer replacement screws no questions asked.

That fixed the problem.

If you put the two screws (one from MXG, one of the stock screws) next to each other, do the threads mesh tightly?

Just did that, they don't mesh. Looks like I need to get the calipers out and measure the two screws and order new ones. One more thing to do...

View attachment 826441 View attachment 826447 Here is a screw sizing chart that I made up for small machine screws. The sizes include metric (mm), wire gauge (2,4,6,etc.), and fractional inches. The diameters are listed in decimal inches. The pitches are listed in TPI (threads per inch). The metric threads do not come out in round numbers in threads per inch. Their convention is mm/thread. You will need a caliper or micrometer to determine the diameter. Most screws measure a little less than their nominal size. Thread gauges are available in metric and US pitches. If you get some nuts of a known size, you can use them for thread gauges. Thread combs are quicker.

seems like I remember having a small issue with a missing clip screw on a Dice I bought...IIRC, I had to call the mothership for the correct size...

On my chart above, that would be 2mm, .079” diameter, and 63.5 TPI. 25.4mm/inch divided by 63.5 TPI equals .4mm/ thread.

I installed the MXG deep carry clips on my Domino and Dice last night, I just reused the Spyderco screws. The only reservation that I had was that the Spyderco screw heads are ever so slightly smaller in diameter than the ones that MXG sends with their clips. But there's 3 screws holding the clip onto the frame, so I'm sure it'll be ok.

Thx again for the help guys. As always, it's appreciated.
