Domino & Dice Owners:

I bought a Domino and a Dice for my brother. The Domino is very smooth, but the Dice, not so much. I recently got a Domino & Dice but they are silky smooth. I’m pretty sure the previous owner lubed them and flipped them a bunch and “broke them in” for me. I’m new to flippers; Spyderco’s particularly. Do they just need to be opened/closed/flipped a bunch for them to break in? When I open and close the Dice I can “hear” it. I assume that’s the moving parts just need to “get acquainted” and all will be smooth like mine. Is this the case? I appreciate any input or help you kind folks can offer.

Thx for the help.

I'd try a touch of oil and see if that helps smooth it out. My Dice was very smooth by the way.

try washing it out with a mild detergent or soap, and actuating the pivot while you clean the knife to get it good and clean of any junk or anything. Let it dry out, then put some good oil in the pivot. Many times that does the trick. Good luck!

First of all I recommend you take the knife apart and clean it. (Please know what you are doing because depending on the year made your Dice may have red locktite.) If you are not the type who takes knives apart then wash out the pivot with lighter fluid and drop some light lube oil in the pivot. (Or don’t I just run them dry.)

If that doesn’t work. I recommend that you look up about the issues Spyderco knives with bearings were having with the washers that the bearings roll on.

They can start to dish if the knives are tightened too tightly which causes a poor action. You might have to send it in to Spyderco if that is the issue. It was most prevalent in the Spyderco Advocate model but has appeared in every bearing Spyderco.

My Domino was pretty rough when it was new. I think the culprit was the coarse satin finish on the blade tang causing friction with the detent ball. After a good, long session of repeated opening and closing, the action smoothed out considerably.

^^^This!!!
Try moving the lock bar/detent ball away from the blade, open and close and see how it feels.

It's the detent ball causing friction with the blade. They need to break in a little. A drop of oil will also smooth the action but there needs to be some break in first. Do not disassemble the knives.

My 4 year old Domino is smooth as glass. My new Dice drops freely when the detent ball is not in contact with the blade. Over time my Dice will smooth out as well.

Thx guys. I guess I’m spoiled by the Domino and Dice I got in a trade. The previous owner did the breaking in for me. I’ll try a drop of lube and just work it open and closed a lot.

Thx again.

If you're carrying tip down, check to see if the clip screws are putting undue pressure on the pivot area. You can easily check this by removing the clip and see if it flips better. My Dice had this problem so I switched to tip up >>> problem fixed.
