New Jersey officials are warning hunters and residents near a toxic waste dump in the Ringwood area about consuming the animals, two months after a lead-contaminated squirrel was found in the area.

"It’s ridiculous that they’re coming up with a squirrel advisory ... It should be an advisory against a consumption of any wildlife,’’ Spiegel said. "The whole food chain up here is contaminated.’’

Yes lead effects the brain which might explain the 'mentality 'of the NJ residents.

Ever hear of mad squirrel disease, its Similar to mad cow disease?
What about cattle mutilations? Is it the government checking the cattle for BSE.

They're saying not to eat squirrel more than twice per week. Even for those who hunt squirrel, that is plenty....usually. In fact, for the casual hunter coming up with 2 meals of squirrel a week would be pretty difficult.

Before rehab I was eating 3-4 squirrels a day......who ever thought it would come to this////LOL :)

LOL RescueRiley.

Back in the day, I remember the WI DNR being all up in arms that no one should eat fish from the Wisconsin River more than twice a week, I think it was mercury they were concerned about. Like someone said, catching/hunting enough of any one kind of small game or fish for more than a meal or two a week is out of the question for most people.

Mind you, I'm not making light of lead or mercury poisoning, it's a good thing they keep an eye on that... and showing direct effects of polutants on humans, is about the only way to get industry to stop dumping crap intot the air and water. I just think they blow it out of proportion a little sometimes.
