Ivory Yakuza - pic Don Fogg

Folder, collaboration with Randal Gilbreath - pic Don Fogg
I have only seen one other such folder - ever.

A few bowies - crappy pic by yours trully. The bottom knife is an early Kemal, a collaboration between Don and Murad Sayen. I picked it up for a song on eBay several years ago.

Shank - pic Don Fogg
Leaf blade forging is hard enough, I can't imagine how hard it must be on a small blade like that...

I wanted that Shank, you beat me to it. Cherish it, I doubt we will see another like it. If you ever want to sell it, you know where to start.

I owned one of the folders like yours, but the guy tried to screw me on the deal, so I gave it back to him. Tried to charge me $1,800 for a $900 knife.

That sword is amazing. Elemental is the only word that comes to mind.

OUTSTANDING bladeware Joss.  The Yakuza bowie is still one of my all-time favorites.

What a treat!

Thanks Joss.

I don't think this is trying to screw you. I wouldn't sell this for $900. It's too rare for this. IMHO, the price is set by the market.

I agree, Don's one of the best. But tell me, why are some of the hamon's white and others dark? Or is that one of Don's best kept secrets. I love the white hamon especially. Tried my hand this weekend at a hamon. I'd got one of my blades back from HT (I'd oredered it clay backed). But Good Lord, doing the hamon and getting it right is NOT easy, or at least it wasn't for my. My hat's off to the Masters of the Hamon!!! :)

This was at the Guild Show in '97 or '98. I asked him, dealer to dealer, what the cost of the knife from Don was. He said $1,800. That was a lie. Just to rub it in a little, the blade on that one was Spirit Damascus.

The cost of something is determined by the seller and the buyer. Those Kresslers are still on the website. So is an R.B. Johnson that I have sort of wanted for about 6 months. I think rather than pay the asking price, I am simply going to remove R.B. from my collection, as he does not take orders, and is SOMEWHAT difficult to deal with, and replace it with the Mike Lovett knives that I have on order, or Geno Denning, who we both know is excellent to work with.

My point here, is that if you have no buyer at your price, the knife is not going to get sold. This "dealer" was not exactly beating the crowds back with a stick, so chances are really good that if I had not been looking at that Fogg/Gilbreath folder, it would not have seen ANY action at the Guild show. That was then, this is now.

Thanks for a look at some gorgeous Fogg knives.

I agree with Joss, that it is a function of photography to embellish it. The best 'white' hamons have a blade reflection off of a dark surface and side lighting. The 'dark' hamon has a white blade reflection and upper lighting. This is a traditional method.

I am learning how to attempt to dramatize the hamon better. But it also comes at some expense of the rest of the knife. This type of shooting requires quite a bit different setup.

Don has the knowhow to get it. I love how he does this along with his other talents. :)

Ah, got it, thanks.

Thanks for the awesome show guys!

Don Fogg sure has some of the most gorgeous hamons I've seen on modern cutlery.
His stuff is ALWAYS a special treat to see.

Man, that is an impressive collection. I have a Shoal's Bowie as my desktop at work and that's as close as I got to a Fogg knife. :)

His work is truly inspiring and really keeps me plugging away in my little shop.

  Holy smokes! That's some awesome stuff.

Burch, ya see that hamon on that last Fogg knife? That's what I want you to do on my next knife! ;) :D

What a timely thread! Don Fogg's knives are my current obsession, I've only been able to pick up two (reeeally want a 5" utility Japanese style...)

The second one I got on Ebay....$475!!! :D

If the white hamon's are trick photo's, then why are so many of the pics still showing a white hamon? Not all the pics were taken by Don. Not doubting you, but just asking an obvious question.

Look back at Joss' photo of his AMAAAAAZING sword, done by BladeGallery. In the longer full-size image they reflect the hamon off of a mostly bright background. You can see the traces of the hamon and it appears darker....

... then look at the same hamon on the inset photo. The blade has been allowed to reflect a darker background and now the same hamon appears white.

Clear as mud?? :)
