Don Hanson III Bowie

A fine 'Old School' ABS Bowie.
Good looking damascus pattern, but not quite as sexy as your current models.

That little sunfish appears to be a teenager. :D

Don: Do you remember the year for this one?
John, the listing says 1997, but to be truly honest, I don't remember much about this bowie. Which is strange because I thought I remembered them all. Must be gettin old, lol... I was making mostly folders back then also.

My first thought was it's forgery. But it's not and is slowly seeping back into my mind :p

I saw this one too, its definately not a DH3 homerun (how often do you hear that?) but its a cool knife. Is this before you did spacers/collars or is it just like that?

Jon, this one was before I started making bowies :D

At that time I was gettin heavy into damascus autos, big time. Started bowies in 2004.

I saw that when it first went up. At first, seeing the listing and clicking in mouthwatering anticipation. Next, frustrated because I couldn't decide whether to laugh or to cry. :D

Quite honestly, I thought it was a forgery, myself. Oh, man, I'm sorry, but that is sooooooooooooooooooo unhansony! :jerkit:

So, Don, would you REALLY charge $2,500 to recreate such a masterpiece? ;)

Question to DHIII: Are you going to put in a last minute snipe so that it is never in public view again?

Its still a nice knife. Beats many others out there and probably would perform nice. Its just not the refined and 'perfect' kind of knife we are used to from his modern stuff.

BTW, I'm just pulling his chain. I know it's an early knife and quite fine by most standards. It's just that Don has gone from building 8-track tape decks to Ipods rather quickly, and I, at least, am used to being absolutely floored by his Bowies. So, actually, it's a (very, I'm sorry) backhanded compliment to one of the greatest makers who ever lived (IMO). :)

Remember, though, even Don said he thought at first it was a forgery.

I don't think Don has anything to be embarrassed about

Ditto to that. I've owned many of Don's knives; some of them were his really old ones. Even those were very nice. Wish I still had that L6 hunter with stag slabs and leather sheath that I got from Don years ago, late Sunday afternoon, about a minute from the St. Louis knife show closing for $50. For some reason, the friend I traded it to won't give it back. ;) :)

As I referenced in my previous post, it's a very nice but very typical ABS Bowie from the 90's>early 2000's.
Along the line of the Custom Knife "Golden Age" thread?, it really demonstrates how far, not just Don, but many ABS makers have come in design, embellishment, materials and construction methods over the 7-8 years.

These days, $2500 will get ya a similar piece, but I'd have to change a few things

No snipe from me, but I do hope if finds a good home :)

Thanks for the good words, folks!
