SO a freind of mine had a damascus knife that he new nothing about and buseted the handles off. so i ended up with the steel and reprofiled it and but some green and black micarta on it with brass pins. It still needs alittle cleaning and it is not sharp as i am planning on giving it to his 10 year old boy. He is into knives and has a dull old timer, so i am leaving it dull for him (sharp enought to cut but wont push paper or shave). Is this an acceptable gift or should i hang on to it until he gets older?

I think you should ask his father, not us. :)

I wouldn't hesitate to give a seriously sharp knife to a 10 year old, if he were a responsible kid.

I think Esav Benyamin is right: Ask his father/mother/parents. After that, I believe he will learn more if it is sharp. People don't learn to respect a dull blade.

Please please please sharpen it. He needs to learn to respect knives and how to use them properly as a tool and that is not possible with a dull knife. I love the knife the micarta goes perfectly with the damascus! You did a great job!

ok his dad said it was fine so i sharpened it up then proceeded to cut the mess out of my finger:grumpy: His dad told me he hopes his son doesnt like it so he can inherit it from him. I will finish it up soon and post some better pics.

Thanks for all the kind words.

That's awesome. I'm glad I'm not the only one who believes in putting knives in the hands of responsible kids. Nice job on the handles, looks great.

Great posts in an overall feel-good thread. Kudos for the fine restoration work.

that sounds awesome! And im glad you're sharpening it! Like everybody said so far, thats the only way he'll learn! You just have to teach him to KEEP it sharp too! thats the next step....
