I just recieved my "closeout special" from Camillus. There's a reason why it was so cheap...it's the ugliest knife I've ever seen!

It's their "Desert Tan" USMC knife.

It didn't look so ugly on their website but it's damn ugly in person!!!

The only up-side to this particular knife, is the blade is ground symmetrically, which in my experience is hit or miss on any USMC knife.

It's too cheap to return so I'm going to keep it but I have to strip that ugly epoxy paint and cold blue it.

The moral of this story is...pay more and get something you know you will like!

:barf:

Yupe, they are not so good looking (read : butt-ugly), but they get the jobs done. Pretty cool knife, in term of performance.

IMHO, if you buy an ugly knife, you won't be afraid to ding it and will use it more. Just received an HI Bilton in the mail and it's too pretty to use. But, as it was meant to be, I will use it anyway. :)

Yeah the non-CUDA military knives doesn't look that great, but at least they get the job done, and I can trust their heat treat.

I have a feeling that the knife you bought, wasn't designed so much to be attractive, as it was to be functional.

By the way.....it's spelled collector....not collecter.:D

This isn't a knife that I would be buying for it's good looks. For 27 bucks you are getting a good user and an excellent value.

crosman, go to Camillus at http://www.camillusknives.com/1mainframe.htm and find Closeout Store on the upper left list. The Model #1760DZ Military Camp Knife is about halfway down.

Good deal, but I've always gotten the basic unpainted version for about the same price. These special editions are usually beside the point on a utility knife.

Some knives are ugly but have a toughness that is appealing...this thing does not have that appeal.

The beige coating is almost white...too ugly to use as is. Makes my puke!

Eh Paratrooper, that's because you're using an American dictionary!

Don't even bother working to strip the coating off and all that.

Just buy a can of flat black automotive spray paint and give it shot. Odds are it will und up less ugly, though it probably still won't be a looker.

Personally I've never seen a knife that was too ugly to use.

I was actually thinking about picking up a pilot survival knife...what's the deal with that knife? I heard they're nearly impossible to sharpen, is this true?

I got the desert tan USMC closeout and the Pilot knife, too. Their finish is horribly ugly. I could do a better job with some beige spray paint. But I don't care because I bought these knives to abuse, so eventually the tan finish will be scratched, etc. Overall, glad I got them anyway.

I'm with collector, don't buy ugly.

Of course there are 2 kinds of ugly. Ugly design and ugly workmanship.

Ugly workmanship is fine on a working knife. There is no excuse for buying ugly design.

Then again, ugly can have a certain charm:

I know they don't get much respect, but I'm kind of fond of the Pilot Survival. Definitely a blade you're not afraid to use. I've had several over the years and they've all performed well. As far as sharpening, never had a problem. I could be mistaken on this, but I believe it's 1095 steel, just like the Kbar. I carry mine in a BlackHawk sheath and wrap the handle with paracord. Makes for a very nice little package. Just MHO.

I didn't buy the Camillus USMC tan model because it was good looking, but because it's a good user. For $28 bucks that's cheaper than one on base and no gas required to get there. Bang for the buck and as long as you don't try to use the buttcap as a sledgehammer it'll still be around when you're 80.:D

ok... ugly knives? have you seen the fanatics that use spyderco? 4yrs of em and 20some in my current collection, and a few(8-10 so far) given as gifts(another one given away today).

May be fugly, but comfy.

I have yet to have a knife too ugly to use. I buy em to use.
