Don't buy cheap knives !

Looks like a cheap kitchen knife?

Good thing the perp didn't follow that advice. Though, the body armor the cop was probably wearing under his shirt would have saved him anyway.

I think a better lesson would be to not put yourself needlessly into lethal danger.

Ingram pulled out an expandable baton and hit Leonardi on the arm to get him to drop the knife, but the suspect wouldn't loosen his grip, police said.

"That's when he lunged at me," Ingram said.

The cop took a real gamble with his life, and happened to win the lotto this time.

Bulletproof vests are generally not knife- proof.

The lights were out and no one answered the door last night at Leonardi's home, where the lawn was adorned with a Charlie Chaplinesque statue of a clearly drunken man hugging a lamppost and holding onto a bottle of booze.
What a classy guy...

I guess the shield worked, maybe they should make them bigger :D .

sorry about the double post!

The cop was lucky. Maybe his biorythms are all up, he should go buy a lotto ticket!

Yeah - the perp should thank his lucky stars he's still breathing. People have been shot with screwdrivers, reaching for their waistband, and other things far less threatening than actually stabbing a cop.

Sounds like this turned out best-case scenario for everybody!

Actually, probably not. A lot of body armor is only good against gunshots. Pointy and sharp things stabbed against it go right through.

Except the violent drunk is still around. The recidivism rate for criminals with histories of substance abuse, lack of self-control, low IQ, and anger issues is probably very high.

I'd bet a dollar it's not the first time, nor the last, that guy's caused problems or tried to hurt someone.

Helle, you bring up another important point. He is a rookie and has a few things to learn. There are many cops and others who have the thought " It's only a knife " !!... No, a knife is a DEADLY WEAPON and you're actions should be appropriate .He should have had his gun drawn and kept his distance and immediately fired if the BG got closer .

Agreed mete.

Anyone remember the old BM ad where they had a Bogazuski spike sticking clean through a bullet proof vest?

That officer needs to go to church and thank God for a miracle.

Never heard of any blade so poorly made that it would shatter on impact with a metal piece that would have itself moved back with the impact. It wasn't even the case of the knife hitting an immovable object like an anvil or piece of concrete and shattering. The blow would have been cushioned at least a bit. No piece of metal that size should reasonably shatter on such an impact.

It woulda been ok I think. I have some body armor I got for $200. It has a big ass '' trauma plate'' in the front and back. I don't think anything could go through it. And it seems like a ''cheap'' vest to me. I would imagine the ones a NYC cop wears are much better. I also think a more veteran cop woulda just shot the guy. Just basic knife defence videos you can see on you tube tell how very very dangerous a knife is. Just glad the Officer is ok.

no actually cops mostly wear fabric vests that only stop bullets, there lighter and really better suited to a cop that knows what hes doing, "dont let him get close". The plate vests were phased out and were really unweildly in most situations a cop got in.
