I wonder what type of knife it was but breaking into 4 pieces is really poor quality. Fortunately it saved the cop ! www.nydailynews.com/front/story/502043p-423332c.html

Ingram pulled out an expandable baton and hit Leonardi on the arm to get him to drop the knife, but the suspect wouldn't loosen his grip, police said.
"That's when he lunged at me," Ingram said.
Gads, how I love the NY tabloid writing style!...a wild-eyed and boozed-up Joseph Leonard...
What a classy guy...The lights were out and no one answered the door last night at Leonardi's home, where the lawn was adorned with a Charlie Chaplinesque statue of a clearly drunken man hugging a lamppost and holding onto a bottle of booze.
Don't they give cops guns in NY?

Though, the body armor the cop was probably wearing under his shirt would have saved him anyway.
Except the violent drunk is still around. The recidivism rate for criminals with histories of substance abuse, lack of self-control, low IQ, and anger issues is probably very high.Sounds like this turned out best-case scenario for everybody!
