dont ever do this to your knife

IS that the Bear Grylls super knife? I didn't think it needed sharpening. For $600 I would think it would stay sharp forever! :D

That didn't look like the mighty "Bear Grylls" knife to me. It looked like a junker of some sort- it had a bottle opener on the spine of all things. That "sharpening method" he was demonstrating was about as crude as you can get. Not only that, he only pulled his blade across once per side. Yup, that ought to do 'er. Sharp as a razor after that, I'm sure.

It all looked staged and contrived to me. He did a sloppy job of "acting like he was stropping that knife" and if it were truly dull or rolled or whatever, it sure got sharp awfully fast considering his lame attempts at stropping that knife . . .

It was a very lame and fake sharpening, but I don't see anything wrong in particular with utilizing this method with an appropriate sharpening technique.

If I was 'stuck' in a forest and my knife was dulling I would try it, would make more sense to just try and find a simple abrasive stone though, rather than all that work expending my energy smashing a rock.

Correct answer.

that entire clip was so fake.

he clearly made no real attempt to sharpen the knife, using one stroke per side and not even attempting to maintain an angle.

Also, the part with the frog was staged.

There was no frog, it was footage shot seperatley, at least thats what it looked like to me.,

Yea that method is total BS. Using the stone whole would have worked much better. Goes to show that while Bear may know a whole lot about some stuff he doesn't know squat about knives.

That was a lot of energy to waste to do absolutly nothing. Why do they have to douch up that show so much?

I know If you where out for a LONG time and had time( Witch you would) to make the sharpener properly and you had a AUS4 knife, and you did it properly it would put an incredibly toothy saw like edge on there. maybe strop it on your belt( If you have one) or whatever you can find. I actually tried this technique with a old beat up sog seal pup. It was so old and beat up that it was turned into a designated throwing knife by my son. so I tried it and it quickly made a toothy edge that could cut rope easily instead of no cutting ability at all. I know Grylls is sometimes corny, but remember, it's ENTERTAINMENT. the closest thing to any type of survival show is Les Straud "Survivorman", and "Escaped"

I Really do Like his "Superknife" It's my favorite type of sheath system. Leather that can be worn horizontally. But WTF??? Whats 350 Euros? 500-600 US???

P.S.
My Method was slightly different, But based on the same idea. I used a piece of wet leather and sandstone. so it basically made coarse-med. grit sand paper. and nobody can say you can't use sandpaper to sharpen a knife. but that episode gave me the idea to modify the technique. so it's not completely worthless. And remember, it's a TV Show. it would take the ENTIRE Hour to show proper knife sharpening technique. It just shows a simple method that can be modified to your needs. as if you never punched anyone before. and on some show they showed you the basic jab. it's not the be all end all. it's just a base to modify and experiment with.

Grylls is kind of a dork though, all else aside.

Exactly

yet more proof why I think the guy is a prat.
and the scout association made him chief scout. I dispair, I realy do.

now ray mears......

And even if he was insistant on creating a strop out of crush rock rather than using the stone as a "stone", I find it hard to believe there weren't pockets of sand somewhere in that body of water already.

Television is for entertainment; Look at how entertained we all are with him by taking our own precious time just to talk about him, Good job Bear -job well done. No offense though -he did half ass it for sure
