Does anyone have any input into what I should get?
I have a pretty limited budget and want an all around using knife for hunting, etc.
I will be hunting wild hogs, deer and all the rest of the small animals, squirrel, rabbits, etc.
I would like a folding knife to put in a belt case but I am open to your learned opinions.
Thanks, Don

Don,
Define "limited budget" in a dollar range, that'll help everyone give you suggestions.

I personally don't use folders for hunting mainly because of all the "gunk" that builds up in places you can't reach. The added worry of the blade closing at an inopportune moment makes me a fixed blade man. Besides if you're going to wear a sheath what's the big diff on carring a fixed blade?

I carry my own knives into the field (field testing ya know) I've carried Buck, Gerber and SOG folders with good success. Pretty much unless you buy some Pakichina :barf: POS you'll be fine.

Sorry I wasn't more help, dollar range will help narrow things down for everyone.

Depends upon how limited your budget is.

Bob Dozier is a very good choice for a high quality hunting knife. The K-2, K-4 and K-7 are all $185.

Ron Leuschen makes a line of economical hand-made knives for $85 US.

If you are looking for a production knife, then the forum's host, the One Stop Knife Ship, is a fine place to go browsing.

One Stop Knife Shop

EBay is a good place to look for used knives, but caveat emptor.

There are a number of knife auction sites where you can pick up used knives at a fraction of their original price, but of uncertain condition, such as:

Blade Auctions

Good luck!

Yup need a range buddy. How about the users folks in order of price least expensive to most expensive. All these have an offering in the 3 to 4 inch blade which I would claim to be the most widely used hunting/skinning knife around. But everyones got their preferance.

My friend the list never stops. Remember that you can skin a deer with a broken beer bottle but how could you sleep at night. :barf:

Welcome to the forums!:D

If you are a hunter, you GOTTA already have some kind of knife . . . what are you carrying now?
If you are looking for a nice folder you are going to have a hard time finding one with a blet case but can get an aftermarket one.
My recommendations come on several levels

1) CHEAP BUT GREAT! = KaBar Dozier folding hunter. Under $20 but and EXCELLENT buy with Aus8 steel and lockback design

2) STILL cheap and better! = Gerber Harsey Air Ranger II. 3.75" Aus8 blade with a comfortable design that will hold up to alot of use. Under $50

3) Not as cheap but outstanding value! = Benchmade Griptillian, either model or size is a GREAT knife for hunting that will perform ANY Chore you need done. About $60

There are tons of other great knives in these categories and I am sure that others will have their own favorites. To me, these are the most "no nonsense" models I have found in their respective ranges. None have sheaths but all have pocket clips.

for a fixed get a cs master hunter if a folder then get a voyager in clip point light tough cheap.....semper fi:grumpy:

If you like Scandinavian knives try this link:
https://www.helleknife.com/indexx.html

I use a Helle myself when I`m hunting moose, smallgame and whenever I`m out in the woods.
You could also try Ragweed forge. He has some knives from Brusletto.
The Hunter model is widely used among moose hunters in Norway.

For under $75 you can go to Wal-Mart and get both the Buck 110 and the 119 Special and have a choice. They also carry the Buck Alpha and the new Gerber Freeman.good luck.

BK&T--------> for a skinning knife? NO WAY!!!!!!!

the stock of a becker is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay tooo thick...

ive skinned a deer with a sak before.... you can do it with tons of different knives.....

Aaron,
Actually the BK11 Becker Necker works very well as a deer skinner. The stock thickness is .150", but it is a fairly wide blade, and ground thin.

I skinned a deer once with a BK&T CAMPANION to prove a point[another guy skinned a BUICK with one to prove a different point], but it would not be my first choice as a skinner;)

First off, forget the folder...As was already pointed out, "gunk" WILL get everywhere in a folder.

Get a Spyderco Temperance.

How about a Gerber Freeman? The one on the back of the magazines with the guy with the stuffed animal for his girlfriend!;)

Oh yeah I second this. I would personally MUCH prefer a fixed blade for this type of work. Especially for something as corrosive as blood.

I'll back up Matteo.

Ingram's knives will outskin the skinningest of the skinners.
