Since it is now the "RULER" of all my knives, I figgered it ...needed...one.

So..... I put a ruler on one side of the saw.

(OK OK, so I scribed the "3" a little large) I quit at 1/2" divisions cuz I figgered a .....MISTAKE.....was just a-waitin fer me.

;)

That's a great idea, the ability to make "crude" measurements is handy sometimes!

The "fish scaler/Hook Remover" in my swiss champ came with a ruler on it and I've used it several times.

Of course when measuring fish your always add a little!

Lavan-

I am quickly becoming a fan of yours. This is another great mod. How did you do the scribing? (I'm sure you can get 1/4 inch markings on there.)

Scott, being a cheapskate, I did NOT buy a decent set of number stamps which would have made it MUCH neater. I used a $2.49 scribe from OSH.

Had wife hold metal rule along blade while I ...punched... the inch marks. Checked often and it was ...TEDIOUS...to get em right on.

Then I followed the punch with a small triangle file. SAK steel, being a bit harder than Silly Putty is fairly easy to file.

But........YOU ...try the quarter inch marks.

I was skeered to go finer or I wud screw it up.

The factory SHOULD just roll it on.

:)

Hmmmmm..... lookin at dat ... CAN OPENER.

Leetle filin here an dere an....POOF...a GUT HOOK !!!

I'm gettin me a ONE BLADED knife just to preserve my insanity.

:)

Do you think you get those marks in there with a fine wheel of a Dremel? You'd only need to touch down for a second. I don't think I'd need the 1,2,3 markings. My OHT is on the way. Maybe I'll give it a try on my Rucksack before trying it on the new knife.

I would NOT use a Dremel. FAR too easy for it to "crawl" and ruin the whole thing. Punching is easier as if you can feel that the punch has not moved until you hit it with the hammer, it will be where it started. Also easier to orient visually. Dremels can do a ...bunch... before you can say "dammit."

Good advice. Thanks. Are you hitting straight down on the punch--or at angle so it slides enough to scratch in a short line for the inch marks?

I guessing here because I haven't tried it yet, but if you put masking tape down first, then made your measurement marks on the tape, you could be quite accurate. The tape should provide enough bite so the punch should stay in place until you hit it. I'll give this a try as soon as I work up the guts to do it.

I've never found punching and slipping to go together. Punch straight down and finish however.

The masking tape is a good idea. Wish I'd thought of it. Tape first, then mark. I did use tape to ALIGN the punches but didn't think of punching THROUGH the tape.

Good idea.

I finally worked up the courage to give a whack on my Rucksack. It was much easier than I thought. I had a section of I-beam on which to lay the saw blade. I used masking tape, and made my measurements on that. The tape allowed me to put the punch right on the very edge of the blade without slipping. I did go to 1/4 inch marks. I did not scribe in the 1,2,3. Can't wait for the OHT to get here!

Yet another interesting Trekker mod.
The only mod I did to mine was to remove the serrations.
