Don't trust the TV, dont trust the movies

I was thinking the other day how everyone I have ever met basically recognizes the idiocy that makes up most of television programming and hollywood movies.

And yet, when it comes to our beliefs and assumptions concerning people from other countries, we accept it. (albeit with a grain of salt, I hope)

The truth is that we know next to nothing about each other and our assumptions are usually so very wrong.
the very last place we should go for information about our friends across the sea is a movie theater or television set. I dont even recommend going to any government sponsored website.

Get a pen pal. Ask them all kinds of questions and tell them the candid truth.
The future of our species may depend on it.

I agree.

I would also toss in the internet as well. It is very difficult to determine what is true, what is not, people you meet are never who they appear to be (mostly).

Some exceptions, true, but for the most part I think the internet ranks right up there with TV and the Movies.

I agree. www.truthorfiction.com and www.snopes.com help out a lot as far as figuring things out.

I think the news now is hard to discern. So many times they just report what someone says without trying to investigate whether it is true or not. Also it seems like since actually investigating the stuff costs money, it's a lot cheaper to just have 2 commentators argue with each other. Or one commentator expound on stuff. It's kind of sad that the regular news has become more like the net, instead of the net being more like the news. I guess the good thing is with the net at least you can dig around and get various takes on a story and maybe investigate it a little yourself.

I have to agree.

I've started to think of myself as a citizen of Earth rather than of a nation.

The internet though, is enabling almost instant e-mail or voice communication between widely seperated people. I think it is quite different from the other media mentioned, and holds great promise for effective communications between people of different cultures who rarely communicated before. One of the primary remaining barriers is differences in language. Our electronic age may be able to solve that in real-time soon, and another barrier to communication will fall.

Communication does not necessarily engender agreement, but it often does lead to better understanding.

I thought if it's on the internet, it must be true....:( :(

The Internet is the greatest deseminator of propaganda the world has ever seen. No matter what belief you have, founded or unfounded, you can find others who agree with it and can tell you even more of what you want to hear. It is a great tool and a horrible weapon simultaneously. We are going to have to see which way it goes. It is revolutionizing the world and history will decide if it was for the better or not.

Actually, the net is a good place for proving the third postulate here, that there are two ways to look at everything. Pick any issue, and you can find two internet sites equally buttressed by science and research that claim their view is right.

This is where it gets real tricky. You can't trust anyone to do this for you. You have to build your own built in 'sh-t dectector' and process the data. You need abstract reasoning. Thus the Brady bunch against guns would have you believe a gun in the home was 43 times more likely to shoot you instead of an intruder. They arrived as this stat by cooking the books and using crack homes as part of their baseline. Worked for them.

We see a similar dichotomy in attendance in the wild animal thread. Is Ichor right about the Wolf? Is Munk? Or is the truth somewhere between the two?

The internet is a means of transferring data from one place to another. The most effective such tool to date, and accessible to a wide variety of people in different cultures.

True, bullsh!t is a lot of the data transferred. Do you really think this is any different than it has always been? Do you think the pony express or sailing ships transmitted more truthful information?

The internet is enabling connmunication. Nobody is ever going to be able to sort out the true from the false for, or convey the correct opinions to, a free thinking human being.

However, free thinking human beings can now seek and aquire data from sources that would have been very difficult to access even a decade ago.

I was going to say the same thing! Next you'll be telling us that not everything on the TV is real! C'mon Danny, it's happening right there on the screen, how could it not be real life? ;) :D

This sums it up in one paragraph for me.

Yes, Bobwhite said it well.

Only 12.7 percent of the worlds population uses the internet. Africa has the lowest percentage (1.6% of the world users). Asia has the highest (32.6% of the world users). If you however look at % of the population of each continent that uses the internet, Africa still has the lowest (1.4% of it's population). And North America has the highest (66.5%).
This tells me that many cultures are probably not represented. It also tells me that you will be hard pressed to get a true account of a typical resident of, say, Eritrea. What you will most likely get is the views of the richest people in that country. Probably the same for most Third world countries.
You want reality? That will cost you a plane ticket, and some vacation time.
JMHO.

Now that is a great pun on a word. I'm going to remember that one next counseling session.

So if the internet is so great at disseminating information, how come I can't seem to type the write words in the search engine and get any info on tire comparisons :grumpy:

Get the round ones. The new hexagon technology still has a ways to go.
