I took my brand new small sebenza camping this weekend. I had a great time and the sebenza saw a lot of use. Lots of bags to cut open, vines to trim back, etc...
Unfortunatly, I left all my cooking utinsils at home. No problem if you have a seby, right??? So I cooked a large skillet of bacon using only the seby. I followed this up with 6 scrambled eggs, also made only with the seby. The food was great, and I was happy untill I got home and looked at my knife. To my shock I found 2 v shaped notches in the edge 2/3eds of the way back from the tip. I had not intensionly struck anything, so I had to think, how did I do this. I think what happened is when I was scrambling the eggs I must have tapped the blade edge against the rim of the cast iron skillet, probably several times. I know I did not hit it hard, but it must have been hard enough. 30 min on a soft stone only partly reduced the damage, so I have sent it off to CRK for a re-grind. Boy, I feel stupid. I have not damaged a knife in the last 10 years before this. Now this to my new favorite knife. No more scrambling eggs for me!

"Camper chips Sebbie blade edge while scramblin' eggs."

Damn. . .how's that gonna make ya look ?

Like a Sebbie Abuser ! :( :p

You're supposed embellish. . .i.e., "while in fierce mortal combat with this 10' tall griz. . .I plunged my Sebbie into its ribs numerous times. Later that day. . .after the griz met its match ~ me and my Sebbie. . .I was cleanin' my trusty and most worthy knife. . .I discovered several very small chips in the blade. I was shocked. . .after plungin' that knife into that bear 40 or 50 times. . .I thought that there would be more nicks in the blade ! Etc., etc., etc. . .

I think that we need to turn this guy into the SPCA or something ! :p ;) :D

Cool story. . .HenryIV. Bet ya won't be tappin' no skillet with your Sebbie anytime soon.
:)

I dented the edge of my new (S30V) Sebenza the other day on a small staple. When I got home, I used my steel on it. It's fine now.

The moral to my story, get a steel if you carry a S30V knife...

This may be a stupid question, but is there a chance you ruined the steel temperment with the heat from cooking with one??

From what I have heard of S30V, you only damage the heat temperment when the color of the blade changes? But I do not know:confused:

I think you can only change the temper when you get above 600 F or so, so cooking won't do much.

The tip of the knife never got very hot from the bacon and eggs. I did not hold it against the bottom of the skillet for more then a sec. at a time. I think the only way you could hurt the heat treat would be to hold the blade directly in the flame for a long time (ie untell there is a color change.)

BTW I looked at the rim of the skillet. It is old skillet, black from age and use. But I found one tiny, shiny bright nick on the rim. So I think I was right about how the damage happened.

It's a sad story. Next time use your Sebenza to cut a stick. Use the stick to stir your bacon and eggs. :)
