Don't Understand

Hi all. Been doing some lurking lately, and reading back a bit. Doing so mostly because of my fascination with the Sculptura. I think it is one of the coolest new knives to come down the pike in awhile. I'm having some trouble understanding why it is talked about so little here.

The aspect I like the most about the Sculptura is the translucent handle material. Just discovered today that another model is to have the same material. I guess because of the ArcLoc, and the fact that things are going on inside the knife that one can see makes it really fascinating for me. Course, maybe I'm just a kid in a candy store.

Really do think that the Sculptura has a real market as a "gent's knife." I think it is poised to do some real damage to my favorite Spyderco's smaller knives. I was really glad to learn that AUS8 was used, rather than 420HC or something on that order. While AUS8 isn't the greatest steel out, it is well known as a decent steel that takes a great edge, and is quite easy to sharpen.

From the pictures, it looks like a knife that would feel really great in the hand. All curves and smoothness, and with the inset clip, it should be very comfortable to handle.

Like others, I'd sure love to see other colors come out soon. I'm one who has totally tired of black. And, I've been a fan of Zytel for somewhere between 15 and 18 years. That's when I bought my Gerber LUS, which I carried for all but about 3 years of that time period. It still is my major apple peeling knife, and can be cleaned up to look like new. I'm a little perturbed that makers have chosen to present us Henry Ford's basic black all these years, when they could do colors, and now, we learn, even translucent with various colors.

FWIW, if the dealers aren't going nuts trying to reserve a special color for their "proprietary" sales, I think SOG should forget that strategy, and get busy making the Sculpturas in several different colors, giving the REAL customers -- the people who buy and use knives -- the options. Sure, the dealers are customers too, but they are more a resource to a manufacturer than a customer, IMO. I'm sure if SOG made the various colors, the wholesalers and web sellers would be buying all the options available to give to their customers. One part of the original strategy that might be flawed is that many knife buyers might simply be turned off by the one color available. If this results in poor sales, then I don't see why a dealer would want to go out on a limb and presumably make a guarantee of purchasing a large # of knives, with only poor sales to encourage him/her.

I can't help but wonder if a lack of fondness for the present color isn't part of the reason that searching for Sculptura on this forum is a pretty lonely, isolated business. And, the most ppopular of the few threads on the subject began by inquiring about other colors.

I plan to buy one of the green models. But, if I had my druthers, I'd be buying a red or blue model instead. Maybe even just plain clear.

Sorry to be such a gasbag, but that's my style, I fear. Also, as I began this thread, it just doesn't make sense to me that such a really different, cool knife has hardly been mentioned on the company forum.

I agree Bugs! Lets see what SOG does, they are usually successful but I say the more choices the merrier!!!

Hi Bugs,

Thanks for dropping in, your generous comments, and your candor. I agree with you...more colors would be great. Don't rule out SOG adding a color or two to our line, but sales of the green model need to be strong. So far, they have been. If we do add a color, it might be part of next year's introduction, but I've heard nothing either way, so this is just conjecture.

If you guys want some colors, blitz the big dealers with requests.

Thanks, Ron. Am very glad to learn that sales are strong for the green. Still hope that if no individual dealers are willing to opt for a proprietary color, that SOG will seriously consider the notion that other colors might sell even better than the green. It is great to have a business plan, but sometimes such plans fail to realistically consider the influences that will impact success. From the way you've described the plan, the potential that green wasn't the best color choice to start with doesn't seem to have been accounted for.

Just my $.02 on the situation: If given a choice of several colors, asuming that each was attractive to lovers of that particular color, my choices in order would be:
Red
Blue
Orange
Clear
Yellow
Purple
Green

I realize that everybody is likely to have a different arrangement of the colors. I would suggest that if 30%-40% or more of a decent # of potential customers would put green last or in the bottom 2 or 3, that some attention might be paid to that fact.
