I freaking love when a brand new sebenza breaks in and get's that glassy kind of smooth opening and closing.

Definitely. After its most recent cleaning, the my Micarta Insingo is almost there. My Large 21 has that glassy smooth feel.

Thats what I love about the regulars. I have had new regulars out of the box and they had that silky smooth hydraulic feeling from day one and it never deminishes. When they do tighten up a little after awhile, thats when I know its due for a cleaning, or that I have pocket lint in it....lol. I have heard of breakin periods with the 21, but never having that many for a long period of time, I cannot vouch for them. I have had 21's though that were tight, I have had them that were super smooth too. Some prefer one or the other. This is where I think the adjustable pivot of the umnumzaan or the new 25 sebenza shines in that it can adjust to anyones preferences.

My large and small classics really came into the world of smoothness after about a year. My two insingos are still tighter but I expect that after a year or two they should match my classics.

I just got my brand new small sebenza today and it's definitely tighter compared to the used large sebenza I had a while back, but it still feels awesome. How long did you guys wait before you stripped it down, cleaned, and lubed it?

I broke my first Sebenza down after a week. Did it need to be broken down? Nope:D I just wanted to get it out of the way because I had never broken a knife down before so I felt this was the knife to start on and wouldn't you know, I stripped a screw:rolleyes:

Cut to a few Sebs later and about a dozen breakdowns, I only do it every other week if that. I don't use them in environments that call for a constant cleaning at the end of every day so I'm sure it's different for everyone, but it's good to get to know your knife and how to break down, clean, and put together your Sebenza(s).

By the way I've purchased all my Sebenzas new from dealers and only one needed a break in period, but when it got silky smooth I noticed it:thumbup:

Ya i take my seb down every other week aswell because im a clean freak and i use it to cut meat a bunch so it does get pretty dirty. It's becoming smoother and smoother every day.

If you want a smooth Sebenza all you have to do is polish the washers on a leather strop with a little polishing compound. I have a large 21 Insingo and a large 21 CGG after the polishing trick both are smooth as glass. Check out jdavis on youtube he has a step by step video on how to do this. I just skip the first part (sanding the washers)

My small micarta Insingo was pretty stiff the first few days I had it. My thumb got a little sore trying to open it. Now, two weeks later, it is smooth as butter and almost too easy to flick open with my thumb. The most smooth and solid knife I've ever beheld.

I know the blade gets smoother after breaking in, but if my lock bar is a tad sticky would that smooth out over time? I tried the pencil and sharpie trick and it works for a couple of times but it goes back to being sticky again.

I'll be stroppin' mine after work! Thanks for the heads up!

How sticky? Have you broken it down, cleaned it, then reset the lock by flipping the blade open?

Just sticky enough where I feel a slight resistance when I push the lock bar over. I've already taken it apart, cleaned and lubed it.

One of mine did that too. I took it apart, cleaned it, lubed it...still a tad sticky.

Remembered that I forgot (that's a weird sentence) to give it a slight, SLIGHT wrist flick after putting it back together to reset the lock. Took it back apart, put it back together, gave it a SLIGHT wrist flick and the sticky was no longer there.

Just a thought.

Thanks a lot for the advice, I'll give that a try next time I clean it.
