My old man was checking out my Speedtech today. He thwacked it open, put finger prints all over the blade and then, blasphemy of blasphemies, dragged his callously thumb across the blade before pronouncing, "Yep. It sure is sharp all right."

No kidding! I already know that. Now stop dragging your thumb across it.

Did it on my Spyderco Native yesterday! I'm used to thumbstuds over the Spydiehole.

As I tried to flick it open, my thumb skidded across the blade. I was horrified!

Luckily I was unscathed except for that razor sharp CPM 440V blade taking surface skin about the thinness of tissue paper.

Close...er...shave.

It happened that people tried it over the edge of my knives ...

I do not understand...
why passing a finger across a blade should be so horrible?

Can't say that it bothers me, no matter if they slice themselves good. As long as they wipe the blood off the blade afterwards, and don't bleed all over me. But I'll keep that in mind if/when I ever get to see that Synergy.

Sorry I missed you guys at the bar. And all week, for that matter. Testing was kickin' my ass; I was at the office until 7:30 Thursday night.

I got the Damascus Case in, but am still waiting on the Falcon II. Hopefully it will come in either today or early next week, so you can take a look at it.

The BM 875 Sentinal was the worst. If you didn't think about very carefully opening it correctly, your thumb would end up right on the razor sharp serrations. I never actually cut myself, but can vouch that the serrations are very sharp! Walt

Are you saying a thumb will dull the blade??</font>

Part of the Boy Scout I received so many many years ago was to never touch the edge of the blade, for two reasons. First, (duh) if the knife is sharpt you might cut your thumb. Secondly, if it's not sharp you'll embarass yourself by not cutting your thumb

No, wait, that wasn't it. The real second reason was that the oils, grit and grime on your thumb could encourage corrosion. Maybe that was all a bunch of crap, who knows. But it still bugs me.

The worst I have seen is the Kershaw Boa. If you are used to opening a knife with thumbstuds and not the speed-safe your thumb ends up pushing on the edge. That is why I won't get one.

Yes! A guy I know did that with my Sebi! I think it if fair to say that while he ran his thumb down the blade gently, there was a sudden hair raising moment when he said "****" and realised that with no pressure he had cut the top layers of skin on his thumb! It started bleeding about 20 mins later! Now that is SHARP!

I take it you mean running up and down the blade stem to stern as it were, and not lateral movement back and forth to test the 'grip' of the steel edge?

Nope, he went across the edge making sure it felt rough! If he went stem to stern there wouldn't be all those fingerprints, just a stain on his shirt!

It's just plain rude to put your fingers on the blade of someone else's knife. Most folks who aren't Knife People just don't get that.

I made the mistake of letting one of my coworkers handle a cheap plastic-handled folder I was carrying for cutting down boxes. She put her fingers all over the blade and then started tapping the edge against her palm and fingers.

"Don't do that!" I said.

So she did it again and cut herself.

Moron.
