I have come across an interesting little knife - A Fred Perrin La Griffe made entirely in G-10.

It's obviously seen better days, but I 'd like to bring the edge back. Is this a matter of sandpaper or mayby running it on a polishing wheel? Any comments to help me in this endeavor would be helpful.

I've made a coupla edged g10 things using my dremel, sandpaper, files, etc. It is easily worked with any if those especially if you are just putting an edge back on.

BTW, bonus points for using the word doofy

wasnt there a big thread about talking about knives that pass through detectors? maybe the mods should get rid of this one, the last thread stirred up a lotta poop

I guess where the problem is in how not to screw up what is essentially an OK little knife. There is a hollow, then the bevel where the edge sort of is. Maybe I ought to shoot a macro of the blade so see where it could be fixed up, then zero in on what material to use.

I remember rounding out a sharp area of a G-10 scales on another knife, so I am leaning toward extra-fine sandpaper on a block or something.

I wouldnt worry about it man.

This photo shows the view from the top and the hollow grind. The top taper is the way it is to give strength to the tip. I would imagine you can't do a false edge on something like G-10.

This view shows the edge bevel and where it's been worn. I guess I am looking to restore the bevel - I don't know if this behave like metal, whereby a wire edge is formed that needs attention from the opposite side; brought down with succeedingly finer grits from both sides.

Knives like that are basically reserved for use as a lightweight back up to a real knife, or for things where you want it to be non magnetic. Not really meant for day to day cutting.
You should be able to sharpen it with 400 grit wet dry paper on a board or something flat. Just alternate a few swaps on each side till it feels fairly sharp again. Your not going to get it hairpoppin sharp. G10 is tough, but its not really hard enough to take a superfine edge.

Sounds good. I understand about what to expect - I just don't want to ruin what I've got here by using the wrong technique. If I wind up wearing this down without getting a decent edge, well -- in the garbage heap this little thing will go.

Wonder if there are any other thoughts about how to do the edge? Thank you very much.
