not wishing to get to technical, but is there an attachment for a drill press(don't have one yet) that i will describe as a rubber cylinder that you can affix
a round sandpaper backing to so that you can grind curves with?

ther is something similar for a dremel tool. hope what i am asking is clear.

Yes there is....sanding drums. I think one of the knife supply co. sells them. I had a set of 4 that I used to use.

You can also find them at Lowes, Home depot and ace hardware Sizes that can be found at these places are usually 3/4" up to 2 1/2". But the sleeves for the drums go up to only about 120 grit unless you special order them from somewhere.

Yes you can do this but, it is bad for the drill press as the bearings are not made for this type of sideways use. Will make your drill press wobble after a while. I know as I have done this and had to replace bearings.

i think they make drums with extensions at the bottom that fit into a plate in your press vise, which helps a whole lot with the sideways pressure on your bearings. they are similar to router attachments for drill presses.. i'm not sure where to find them but they shouldnt be that difficult to source on the interwebs. you could probably alter them fairly easily too, ive used my press as a vertical metal lathe by sinking the stock in a piece of wood clamped in my vise, never had any problems with bearings.

Of course, for finer grits you can use spray adhesive/rubber cement to adhere finer grit paper to the drums. You can also use 1/2" wooden dowels with fine grit paper taped to them.

I've never had problems with bearings, either.
