Just want to share my story...
I've ordered a Mini Task for my B-Day a month ago. It finally arrived yesterday (thanks Roger). I cut it open (with trembling hands)... and found a letter from Canada Customs instead of the knife. I still can't pull myself together...
The letter says the item is 'spring loaded kife' and therefore prohibited.
I have an option to request a 're-determination of tariff classification'...
Please tell me it's not over yet

p.s. [instead of crossposting] to canadian connection: any hints how to fill up
the B2 form are greatly appreciated.

Customs is very good at doing a outstanding job to make sure that none of us compliant, surviant dwellers of this "FREE" country do nothing wrong.
Yesterday I got a package of fasteners from Halpern Ti. and it was cleared by customs as 8211930000 knives other than fixed blade. It was UNOPENED. Yet the little green decleration tag on the outside says fasteners and driver.
Like I said ya gota love Canadian Customs.
Sorry, I feel for you.

I know nothing about Canadian customs. Still, I'd like to think there is some hope for you, because 2 weeks ago, I saw a Timberline Discovery Lock in a knife shop. It too is an assisted opening knife. I'm virtually certain I saw at least 2 or 3 Kershaw Ken Onion assisted openers also.

I'd suggest you call knife stores and find out how they've been able to obtain assisted opening knives. Maybe they can point the right direction for you.

I recomend that you contact Kershaw knives and advise them of what occured. They have a vested interest in the legality of the speed safe mechanism. They may supply you with information to provide to Canadian customs.
The theory in the US as to the legality of this design is that US and most individual state laws define a "switchblade" as one that is spring activated by a button, lever or other mechanism within the handle of the knife. The speed safe mechanism is only activated by manually moving the blade. This is the purported loophole that makes them legal. What is the wording of Canadian law? Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Basically Canadian law says if it has a spring in it that functions as the blade is opening you cann't have it. Big brother is just trying to protect us.
BBBuuuuut. I have seen may open assist on shelves at knife shops.
Sorry guys but the theory of US law does not apply here in Canada. If I have a rifle in a window rack of a pickup and go into pay for gas, even if the truck is locked I get arrested and lose all rights to firearms for 5 years.

Hi NI200,
Last year I had a Boa come in from the US and had no problem. When I first became interested
in the Boa I contacted a Snap On tool dealer
because I was told they are the Kershaw distributer in Alberta. At that time the Boa was new and he had none but claimed to have other assisted openers like the random task and blackout.Maybe try contacting one and see.Sorry to here of your trouble hope this is of some help.

I too have seen the assisted opening knives in a shop here locally.

I am sorry to hear about this. Waiting for a month to get a birthday note from customs sucks.

I have also not been able to connect to Kershaw's home page for about a week now???
I'll start a new topic on this and see what answers we get.

YES! I've got it!
It took me exactly 2 months, a couple of gray hairs and a customs officer who knows his job (thanks Ken)
Now it's gonna be my favorite toy for quite a while...

Actually, there is not much to tell about. I filled in the Form B2 (Adjustment Request) and that was it, well, it took me a week to fill this form correctly: I spent a day on Revenue Canada web site and downloaded a dozen docs - memorandums, guidelines, criminal codes, etc. They very finicky about your request and refuse to consider it if you don't follow the rules. I requested to reclassify my knife as a folding knife instead of prohibited weapon (9898.00.00.00). Then all you do is wait...
