Hi, Karda:

For future deals, you might consider investing in a postal scale. One of the considerations in deciding whether to purchase a given knife is the weight. Everyone has their limit. I've found that my limit is about 32 oz, although an exception is my 37 oz ASTK, which feels a lot lighter in my hand, but that's probably because a significant amount of the weight is in the very thick full tang on the handle end.

I recently bought a battery-powered scale for around $30. It's accurate to 1/10 oz and goes up to 11 lbs, more than enough to weigh the biggest khukuri or sword. The platform is round, 6" in diameter, big enough to lay a khukuri across and get the weight. I had no trouble using it to weigh my 18" knives and even a 21" Chainpuri. I also was able to sit a pretty big box across the top that weighed in at the maximum of 11 lbs. There seem to be many models out there. I got this particular scale at Office Depot.

An alternative would be to make a simple balance scale. You could hang objects of known weight at one end, and the sale knife at the other until you find one that balances. I'll bet an ordinary wire clothes hanger would work, with a little bend in the middle and a couple of pieces of string to hold the two objects. That's probably how MacGyver would do it. :)

Just a thought.

the images used for the two smatchets are identical.... I was wondering why it looked canted to me until I read the description on the second spear vala

in other news, that BAS looks gorgeous

Just FYI, the Harbor Freight scales are pretty good if you just want pounds or kilograms. I use them for mixing the rubber and plastics components. The following is $17.99 + S&H and I use it all the time:

You can go the postage scale route too certainly. I have separate scales because of accidental spills, etc. I keep a spare of the HF scale mentioned above just in case.

That Karate AK is something else:) It's like an AK and a Falcata had a one night stand...with slightly surprising results:) I really, dig it.

Those Valas are HEAVY, but man are they sweet:) The scabbard that comes with them is top notch. I did have to tighten the frog a bit, and ended up just replacing the leather lacing with some waxed nylon leather-craft thread. It's stronger, and I was able to get it tighter. As a matter of fact, I have to hit up the leather shop this weekend. I think a custom weight distributing sheath would make the Vala disappear on the hip as much as a good holster can balance the bulk of a heavy pistol.

Let us know what you guys think when you get them. While not the most practical of practical designs, they are really, really well done.

I was thinking it's like a mini Falcata, but then I looked at it again and saw that it's not very mini at 21 inches! An in-hand photo would be great for seeing the scale of it. More like a full-length fuller instead of an AK style, and more like a full D-guard instead of the open Falcata handle. And I like the absence of bolster. The grip diameter looks like it would be better for hands that aren't XL. Quite a knife, especially at that price.

Those ghost sharks are really sneaky. I just got informed I missed out on the Vala. My third strike.
