I am a part time knife maker and have always used double shoulders for my sheaths, I was wandering if double bends with a firm temper would be good for sheaths? I don't know what good leather is nor where to buy from, I appreciate any help and comments.

Montana leather company sells grade A hermann-oak tooling leather. And bends are good. I use them for belts or briefcases. I usually get a side and the trim off I practice on or make my self something with it.

Depending on who makes it, bends are an excellent choice for wide variety of projects. They eliminate the softer belly which does not work well for sheaths, holsters and the like and are long enough to make belts and straps. They also eliminate the shoulder which, although good leather, can be wrinkled and have a bit more range markings.

I prefer Wicket and Craig over Herman Oak for several reasons. It’s available directly from the tannery, Hide House, Maker’s Leather Supply and others. I tend to use Makers and Hide House. Bends are the very heart of a side and so you do pay more by the sq ft then you do for a side but ya have less waste so there’s that.
